It is not surprising as fasting, harsh chemicals, stress, and aging can all lead to hair loss and thinning.  So, can supplements help hair to grow thicker and fuller? It is not an easy question to answer. Scientists and doctors don’t all agree on the effectiveness of supplements.

    Experts agree a healthful diet is essential for healthy hair.  For healthy hair eat lean protein, whole grains, legumes, fresh fruit, and vegetables. Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, black cod, eggs, and nuts, all contain fatty acids that are beneficial to hair and skin. You need plenty of Vitamin C for your body to make collagen. Citrus, red peppers, berries, papaya, and kiwi, as well as broccoli, are all good sources of C.

    Harsh chemicals, high heat exposure, or constant tension from tight hair styles or hair extensions can all damage hair and even cause hair loss. Treat hair gently.

    Sudden or accelerated hair loss should be reported to your doctor as it can be the sign of a more serious issue.

    Hair thickening shampoos, masques, and conditioners with ingredients such as caffeine and wheat protein can help hair to look thicker and help it to resist breaking.

Supplements for thin hair and nails are not new but they have grown more sophisticated and expensive. Recently, I tried a sample of Aviva Hair Revitalizer Dietary Supplement. It is part of a system that also includes hair care products which I have not tried at this time.

It contains a combination of ingredients that studies have shown strengthen hair. Here are a few of the highlights from the very comprehensive and exotic formula.

    Aviva contains Silica from bamboo. Silica has been a favourite hair helper of dermatologists as well as alternative practitioners for years.  According to Aviva, “Research shows that silica strengthens hair, and is known to prevent certain varieties of hair loss.” They also state that, “Bamboo extract is the richest known source of silica – an essential element for maintaining the integrity and health of the skin and hair, and combat premature aging.”

    Another interesting ingredient in the formula is  He Shoo Wu (Fo Ti). This is an herb that has been in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for many years to treat hair loss and greying. It is also part of “longevity” medics used in TCM.

    Aviva also contains an herb from Ayurveda medicine called Ashwagandha.

    Biotin, Boron, Selenium, and Zinc are supplements that have been used to treat thinning hair for decade. They are all in Aviva with a host of other vitamins and botanicals.

    Does Aviva work? And is it worth almost $60 a month or $48, if you buy a 90-day supply? That is hard to say.  You can find other hair supplements that cost as much and more. And there are others that contain the key ingredients used to treat thinning hair for much less. I cannot find conclusive independent evidence to support the price or claims, but women with great hair love these supplements.  Several of my close friends swear by these types of supplements and regimes, They tell me they are the only thing that helps their thinning hair.  I have had good experiences with products containing Silica, Selenium and Chinese herbs. Aviva’s formula has “all the right stuff”.  When it comes to supplements, it is a matter of personal preference and results.

    My advice is if you are interested and your hair needs help, pick a supplement you can afford and try it. The proof will be on your head.
