Click on top title to open and scroll  I just finished reading an essay in Town and Country.  It was about the pressure an editor felt to cut her hair and fall in line with a current trend. By now, I am sure she feels vindicated in resisting. The fall collections had plenty of flowing locks and looped chignons. The editor described being at a presentation with a famous hair stylist who kept going on about being “so sick of long hair”.  A few seasons ago the “big news” was that straight hair “was so over” and before that an equally famous stylist was “sick of curls”.

I am not making fun of anyone; artists need change. Without change there is no innovation. But adopting change simply for the sake of keeping up with trends is self-defeating, which brings us to Lauren Bacall.

 Remembering Lauren Bacall

As I finish this issue, I have just heard the news that the great actress Lauren Bacall has died at the age of 89. She was without doubt one of the world’s most stylish women.

 Lauren Bacall

Bacall was first discovered by the legendary Diana Vreeland while she was an editor at Harper’s Bazaar. Bacall was then 16-year-old model. It was that discovery that led to Bacall going to Hollywood for a screen test.

If you look at the cover that Diana Vreeland had shot with Lauren Bacall you will see the tailored clothes and trademark side-parted waves that Bacall is known for today.

Lauren BacalI was lauded as one of the world’s most stylish women for decades. Yet, her look barely varied over the years.  As I viewed photos of her through the years, I noticed at times her hair was a bit shorter or darker and her makeup subtly follows the trends of the time, but once Bacall found her style, she stuck to it. And she never looked dated.

So darlings, update your look. It is essential to keep current. Small tweaks to your makeup and clothing silhouettes are enough to keep your look fresh. Flip through the photo essays on Lauren Bacall to see how an expert did it. And if a new fad doesn’t suit you, pass on it. That’s what Betty Bacall did.

Make time for the things you enjoy and the people you love because, my darlings that is truly where the sweet life lies.

Stretch your manicure

Do you want to stretch your pricy salon for another week? Or perhaps like me, you often don’t have time to go to the salon. Sally Hansen Gem Crush Color captures the hottest trend in red carpet manicures: the glitter manicure. We love these gorgeous little bottles of jewel-toned, transparent, glitter polishes. A single quick drying coat will revive a clipped or dull manicure for another week. Gem Crush comes in eight pretty colours and is a steal at under $5.

Ten ways to look fabulous fast!

You don't have to stand on your head, but a few minutes of inversion works wonders! Photo: Jenna LefkfoffDo you feel less than fabulous? Have busy days, stress, and a hectic lifestyle left you with no time to be glamorous? Well darlings, help is here. Just in time for the holidays, here are 10 fast ways to look fabulous. They really work and won’t break the bank or take more than a few minutes. So no more excuses, it is time to look and feel fabulous. You deserve nothing less!

Wash your face
Cleaning your face is a quick pick me up. Removing grime and old makeup makes you look and feel fresh.  If you are in a hurry, use a clean washcloth or a cleansing wipe so you can leave eye makeup untouched. If you have a few more minutes, indulge in a refreshing mask to refine and moisturize your skin. You look like you’ve been to the spa!

Try Olay Daily Facials Express Wet Cleansing Cloths or L’Oreal RevitaLift Radiant Smoothing Wet Cleansing Towelettes.

Elizabeth Grant’s Cucumber Gel Mask contains soothing botanical extracts of cucumber as well Elizabeth Grant’s anti-aging ingredient Torricelumn. I love this soothing and calming mask; it leaves my skin soft, refreshed, and dewy.

Avène Cleanance Mask helps oily skin look fresh and clear without over-drying it. It contains Avène thermal spring water to soothe skin, botanicals to help regulate skin, zinc to purify, salicylic acid to exfoliate, and kaolin clay to absorb oil and impurities.
Also available in better pharmacies in Canada as well as dermatologists everywhere.

Single treatment Balea masks from Germany and Me-time-treats by Montagne Jeunesse are two of my favourite little indulgences. They are designed as single treatment masques or scrubs, but there is enough in one packet to share with a friend or daughter. Balea masks are found at Shopper’s Drug Mart in Canada and Me-treats can be found online and in many pharmacies. Both sell for about $2 per envelope.

Invert
Take a tip from the yogis and stars of the silver screen and reverse your blood flow for a few minutes. Lie down and rest your legs against a wall and rejuvenate. This is a good time to put a mask on your face.

Fluff your hair
A quick spritz of instant shampoo can perk up tired tresses. If you have a few minutes more, mist your hair with plain water and blow it back into shape. You don’t need more product in your hair; the water and the heat from the dryer will reactivate whatever you used when you originally styled your hair. Add more and your hair may become gummy or greasy looking.

If you like lots of volume, invest in electric rollers; they are the pro’s secret weapon for reviving flat hair.

René Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo is my favourite dry shampoo. Some dry shampoos make hair look good, but your hair still feels grotty. Naturia leaves hair feeling fresh to the roots! Also, try it for any style, if you have hair that collapses. It really does give very fine hair extra staying power.

Blush
Add a touch of blush to look fresh and fabulous. Blush lights up your face. Choose a blush to look more luminous and powder blush for dry skin. Get your blush on, darlings!

Here are few of our universally flattering favourites: La Prairie Cellular Radiance Cream Blush in Plum Glow. CoverGirl and Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Royal Plum. A pretty golden bronze on your cheekbones will light up your face too. One of the prettiest powder blushes we have found is a warm golden rose by Chanel in Orchid Rose.

Whiten your teeth
There are few things more appealing than a bright, white smile. Whiten your teeth with Crest Whitestrips. They are fast, easy, safe and economical. Crest 3D White 2-Hour Express Whitestrips gives you a noticeably whiter smile in just two hours. I love this product because it works!

I also like Colgate Optic White toothpaste. It contains hydrogen peroxide, the ingredient in whitening strips and whitening mouthwash, and silica, to polish teeth.

Highlight your best features
A touch of highlighter can make you look glam in seconds. Add a touch of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes or on the top of your brows to play up your eyes. Sweep a hint of “light” on the top of your cheekbones or around the bow of your lips. This how the stars get their glam glow. We love Benefit’s High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer. The shimmery pink liquid is a favourite of makeup artists. We know why – it’s magic.

Eyeliner
You can add fresh eyeliner over your existing eye makeup to freshen it up and add drama for evening. Liquid liner can make it pop. Pencil liner is easier to smudge for a smoky look.

For evening try metallic eyeliner. DolceDolce’s Anne Gravel and I are crazy about L’Oreal HiP Color Chrome Eyeliner. We wear it over our regular black matte eyeliner. Anne, who has blue eyes, wears the Silver Lightning. I have brown eyes and wear both the Silver Lightning and Gold Charge.  Ladies who prefer like a less dramatic look may prefer to try Violet Volt or Black Shock Chrome liner. The elegant new Limited-Edition Mary Kay Redefining Elegance Luxury Liner in the slim gold tube has a built-in brush that makes application a snap. You can even draw a thin line of liner close to the lashes.

Play up your lips
If you are really rushed you need nothing more than mascara and red lipstick to look polished.  If red is not your style, then go pale and glossy. The best nudes always have a pink or peach undertone.

Sonia Kashuk’s Matte Lip Crayon in Berry Nude are big crayons that go on fast and stay on. You can buy pricier versions, but I love these for under $10.

Berry Nude is an easy red to wear.  It is clear and soft. Find it at Target stores for less than $8. There is also a pretty pink nude. These crayons are a foolproof fast way to wear red lipstick.

Another trick for quick red lips is to find a flattering red lip liner. Use it to line and fill your lips. Blot and top with balm or gloss. This pro trick also works well with a nude liner, and often looks less flat than many nude lip shades.

Wear colour
Ditch the black and grey! A dress or top in a pretty flattering colour will light up your face and make you look fabulous. Try it.

Add some “wow” to your winter look

Red lips for a"Hollywood"smile like January JonesGet a Hollywood smile: A great smile can light up your face. If your teeth are not as white as you would like, it is easy to improve them. The New Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects with Advanced Seal are a snap to use. I love Crest Whitestrips and have used them for years. The independent dental experts I have checked with assure me they are safe – just do not go crazy and use them every day. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you see results.  Use a good whitening toothpaste as well as a whitening mouthwash daily, and your teeth will be “Hollywood” white in no time.

A white smile looks professional and vital. It gives you an edge in tough economy.

Show off your dazzling smile with bright lips. Too many women are afraid to wear red lipstick. They save it for a big night, or never try it at all. This spring, the hottest runway trend is bold red, coral, or orange lips. There is a red for everyone. Most women can wear a clear red.

Some of our favourites are Revlon Red, Chanel Hydrabase New York Red (look for it on Ebay), MAC Russian Red, and L’Oreal Colour Riche True Red

Always exfoliate and condition your lips before wearing any lipstick or gloss in the winter. We love Mary Kay’s Satin Lips Duo. In a pinch, use a clean washcloth to remove dead skin from your lips, and then apply a little balm.

The trick to wearing red lipstick in the daytime, and still look sexy and professional, is to blot the lipstick. Men also like the look of lips that aren’t sticky. Put your lipstick on evenly and heavily from the tube or with the brush, and then blot it, leaving behind a perfectly stained lip. Keep your face flawless. Keep eye make-up simple; wear just mascara and a low-keyed liner for daytime.

If you are feeling a bit femme fatale, wear a perfectly-matched red sweater or scarf. Red attracts positive and sexual energy. If you want a power look, try a matte red lip with a tailored suit.

If you need more motivation to go red, a recent study at ManchesterUniversity using eye tracking soft ware showed that the average man spent more than half his time looking at a women’s mouth after they were introduced. The study also showed that women who wore red lip stick received more attention than those who didn’t. The studies authors concluded that red lipstick is a powerful tool for sexual attraction.

Take it up a notch with neutral. Classy elegant neutrals are big news for spring.Celebrities and models are alreadyembracing this look on red carpet events, in ensembles of rich caramel, toffee, and buttery beiges. Get a jump on the trend by bringing out – or picking up — accessories in rich brown or cognac leathers. Look for ladylike bags in crocodile finishes or polished calf. Anything subtle with an equestrian inspiration will flare too. Aim for a monochromatic look when working with neutrals.

Darlings, this trend always looks rich! It is perfect for interviews or anytime you want to make an impression.

Try wearing all beige or caramel – add matching tights. My favourite look is all beige with crème lace tights from Fogal and beige boots. Let your inner Park Avenue princess out!

Be-jeweled: One of the prettiest trends this winter is a big “jeweled pendant”. Think baroque. If you have pretty hands, get a few pretty cocktail rings and an armful of bangles. Don’t wear them all at once, but stack them for drama and effect! For day, try bold enamel and ethnic-looking pieces. For the evening, look for bangles that sparkle. Shop vintage shops or TJ Maxx, Winners, or accessories boutiques. Get a fabulous costume piece or two, and wear it with everything.

Treat yourself to a trendy emerald dress --the colour Angelina and Catherine wore at the Golden Globes-- only $108 at www.nordstoms.com Maggie LondonBe colourful: Add a shot of colour to your wardrobe. Colour can lift mood, flatter your skin tone and light up your eyes. People react to colour. Wear a pretty periwinkle blue sweater to match your eyes, or a skin-flattering pink scarf. Watch how people react. You may be suspired how wearing the right colour can change your mood too!

Celebrities know the power of colour. If you watched the Golden Globe Awards recently you saw the red carpet light up with colour. Stars glowed in blushing pinks, soft corals and flattering nudes. Other celebrities wore brilliant emerald, sapphire, and scarlet.

Catherine Zeta-Jones looked stunning in a regal emerald green. Lea Michele and Sandra Bullock were pure Hollywood in blush pink.

Be fabulous: Don’t be afraid to be fabulous. If you love animal prints, collect gloves, scarves, and shoes — even a blouse — in feline patterns. All things animal are in now, so enjoy touches of it daily, if it is your thing. Always buy quality. You can find it on sale, so shop now! Save a leopard dress or coat for evening. Never wear more than one touch of the jungle at once – or you’ll risk the JerseyShore look. Animal prints can look classy or trashy; it’s all in now you wear it.

Collect accessories in luxe fabrics and your favourite colours to add sophistication and individuality to your basics. Care for your things, you’ll have them for years. You can rotate them as they come in and out of fashion.
