Michelada, a spicy beer cocktail

Outdoor entertaining is one of the pleasures of summer. The Michelada is refreshing spicy beer cocktail that is perfect for hot summer parties.  Michelada is great for brunch too we are told it is called a “cerveza preparada” in Mexico and used to cure hangovers.  The cocktail contains beer, lime, and assorted sauces, spices, and peppers.  Don Robertos is a brand of pre- mixed spices you can use if you don’t keep a stocked kitchen or don’t like mixing your own. Our recipe and interesting information is from The Traveler Beer Company is a craft beer venture based in Burlington, Vermont. It was la launched in 2012. They say declare their mission as “combining European shandy-inspired refreshment with American ingenuity to create a line of craft beers that are both fun and refreshing.”

 

Recipe for Michelada

Salt, for rimming the glasses

¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice, rinds reserved

Ice

1 ½ cups light Mexican beer

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

2 teaspoons hot sauce

1 teaspoon Maggi or soy sauce

Freshly ground black pepper, for garnish

 

Directions:

Place enough salt in a wide, shallow dish to cover the bottom. Rub the rims of the two glasses with reserved lime rinds and dip the glasses into the salt. Fill the glasses with ice and set aside.

 

Place the lime juice, beer, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and Maggi or soy sauce in a pitcher and mix to combine. Pour into prepared glasses, top with a few grinds of pepper, and serve.
