Simple beauty

I don't hide behind a hat and parasol everyday but I do use sun screenWhen women ask me the “secret” behind my relatively wrinkle-free skin, many of them are somewhat disappointed to find out it is so simple. My number one skin care secret is sunscreen. For years top dermatologists have told patients the same thing; that regular use of sunscreen was the most important way to avoid premature aging.
Now we have an Australian study that proves it. Dr. Adele Green and her team at Queensland Institute of Medical Research studied 903 randomly selected adults under the age of than 55. The study ran four-and-a-half years, from 1992 and 1996.
The group was divided in half. One group was directed to apply a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher, to their heads, necks, arms, and hands daily. They were also told to reapply it regularly. The other group was allowed to use sunscreen as they desired.
At the end of the study the sunscreen group showed no detectable increase in skin aging. When measured against a base-line, the skin of the group who used sunscreen had aged on average 24 percent less than those in the group that used sunscreen at their own discretion.  Beta carotene, which was also tested, was not seen to have an effect on skin aging.
Photoaging happens after years of sun exposure. Along with an increase
hyperpigmentation or “age spots,” it also speeds the skin’s loss of collagen, which leads to loss of firmness.
So the first step in any anti-aging skin care regime is a good sunscreen used with anti-oxidants. Many popular sunscreens now contain anti-oxidants to help reverse free radical damage from the environment which includes sunlight. Many of the sunscreens from La Roche Posey, Murad, Obagi, Neutrogena, and Avène contain anti-oxidants. I like and use all of these brands. I also apply additional anti-oxidants, letting them absorb fully in to my face before applying sunscreen.
If you are sensitive to sunscreen or it makes you break out try one made of minerals. On my face I use only pure natural mineral sunscreens that contain a high concentration of Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. I have sensitive skin, and mineral sunscreen is gentler especially if I will be outside and need to reapply frequently. But for my body I find a spray sunscreen is the easiest way to get quick and complete coverage. As a safety precaution, I avert my face and hold my breath to avoid breathing in the spray. (I also do this with hair products.)
The first step to keeping your skin youthful, beautiful, and healthy can be simple. Find a sunscreen you like and use it daily. Cover all your exposed skin. Never skip or skimp on sunscreen and you will look years – 24 years according to the latest study – younger.

Anti-aging tips from an expert!

No one can stop the clock, but with the right information you can slow it down! Dr. Howard Murad, MD is one of the foremost experts on anti-aging. In this item, Dr. Murad shares tips from his book, Dr. Murad’s The Water Secrets, on how to slow the aging process.
According to Dr. Murad, “aging is a fact of life. Looking your age is not.” Dr. Murad’s The Water Secrets explains what foods to eat to boost youth building and combat wrinkles. The doctor also shares tips on how to slow aging and how to look and feel youthful for decades. This book is full of useful advice.
Dr. Murad’s anti-aging tips:
Daily use of full-spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection (at least SPF 15) is critical to preventing wrinkles, age spots, and compromised skin tone. Sometimes women sacrifice sun protection because they want to avoid using too much product on the faces. To sidestep this problem, simply choose a moisturizer that already contains SPF, or mix a sun protector with liquid makeup for a two-in-one product.
Selecting the right product is key
Cleansers, scrubs, and treatments that are too strong or heavily-fragranced may irritate and dehydrate skin. So, use products containing exfoliants, hydrators, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories. AHAs slough off dead skin cells; essential fatty acids, ceramides, and Shea Butter intensely hydrate; Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals; chamomile and green tea diminish redness and irritation.
Eating poorly
Finally, illness, chronic conditions and certain medications can make skin appear older. Many elements associated with good health, such as weight control, nutrition, and exercise, can affect the skin. Clearly, a complete diet overhaul is the logical solution. However, Dr. Murad suggests focusing on a few small changes to make a big difference. Add good fats, such as walnuts, avocado, and olive oil to help rebuild cell membranes and reduce dry, flaky skin. Enjoy embryonic foods, including eggs, beans, and seeds. These foods contain all the building blocks for regeneration, and will flood your body with vital nutrients to make all your cells healthier.
Eat your Water!
What happens when we drink eight glasses of water a day? We are in the bathroom eight times or more, flushing our system of vital nutrients. So, eat your water! Raw fruits and vegetables contain structured water which releases into your system at a slower rate, allowing you to stay hydrated longer. These foods also contain vital nutrients to help your skin and your body stays healthy.
Stressing out
Cultural stress is the constant and pervasive stress of everyday life, which has become a normal part of our society in this day and age. This continuous stress maxes out our tolerance and lowers our stress threshold so that when stressful events happen – such as your boss dropping that huge project on you at the last minute – we hit maximum stress capacity.
Take a deep breath and remember that the most important person in the world is YOU!

Dr. Murad recommends a few mantras that will help center your brain, and avoid the inevitable “freak out”: “Don’t let failures spoil your successes.” “If it isn’t personal, don’t take it personally.” “Be imperfect; live longer.” And, “Even in disaster, look for the good.” Choose the one that speaks to you and repeat!
By revamping daily routines through external, internal, and emotional methods, Dr. Murad’s Inclusive Health philosophy gives guidelines on how to capitalize on cell regeneration. By taking advantage of the completely new population of cells that crop up every four to five weeks, rewinding time and rebuilding youth is possible.

Anti-aging essential

The best anti-aging protection we have is still sunscreen. Too much sun exposure causes free radicals that can result in premature lines and wrinkles. It also breaks down collagen and elastin which causes skin to sag.

The best sunscreens have a high SPF to filter out both UVB and UVA rays. What’s essential: powerful broad-spectrum protection against both UVB and UVA rays,
And adding anti-oxidants to neutralize free radicals turns ordinary sunscreen into a potent anti-aging weapon
The Glytone Sunscreen Spray Mist SPF 50 is a light mist that dries to the touch in seconds, making it comfortable in the hottest stickiest weather. This is easily the most comfortable sunscreen I have ever worn!
According to Glytone, the mist contains “a combination of UVA and UVB sunscreens that are “photostabilized” so that they don’t break down with sun exposure while offering optimal broad spectrum protection. Innovative antioxidant technology converts reactive free radicals into non-reactive elements (water and oxygen) for maximum protection against photoaging.”
It also contains “Patented Delta-Tocopheryl Glucoside, a potent, time-released precursor of Vitamin E, provides continuous antioxidant protection.” This is the perfect product for every day. You can spray it on before dressing and have complete protection that will not ruin your clothes. A good sunscreen used correctly is the best way to avoid lines, wrinkles, and hard-to-remove age spots – as well as potentially life-threatening skin cancer. for a physician directory

Sunscreen and anti-oxidants

If you learn only one beauty lesson, let it be to use sun screen with anti-oxidants every day.
We now know antioxidants used with sunscreen substantially increase the anti-aging benefits of sunscreen. Olay Complete Ageless SPF 20 has the antioxidants green tea and gingko to promote healthy cell renewal. Olay Complete Ageless is non-greasy and won’t cause break-outs.  It’s the perfect low-maintenance solution for busy beauties on a budget. About $20.

Olay Complete Ageless Eye Brightening Cream also has the powerful anti-oxidants green tea and gingko as well as niacinamide to help reduce hyper-pigmentation, brighten, and reduce fine lines. About $18.
Remember to carry your sunscreen with you and reapply it frequently.  You need to wear it inside, too.  Aging UV rays are able penetrate to most glass.  Darlings, remember you are never too young to protect your skin against premature aging, and it is never too late to look younger!  Beauty is a gift, guard it.
