Model Jane Birkin in the 60's with her basket The original "Birkin" wasn’t a pricey leather bag from Hermes. In the 1960s, British model and fashion icon Jane Birkin was seen around Paris using a straw basket for a handbag. She claimed she could never find a bag large enough to hold everything she needed for her day.

In 1981, Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermes, sat next to Jane on flight from Paris to London. He later designed and named a black leather weekend bag for her, which she used for a while. That bag became Hermes' iconic Birkin bag, selling for thousands of dollars.
