Catherine Urbanek

Catherine Urbanek

The actress, Catherine Urbanek took a break from writing and directing

to star in the political satire Courting Des Moines.

The story revolves around “a congresswoman running for president

and starting her campaign in Iowa. The film mixes interview footage

with current presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders,

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz merged with a fictional story line.”

Catherine took time from her schedule to talk to DolceDolce.com about

her role in the film and to share a few of her her best tips on beauty, fashion and fitness.Courting Des Moines

Here is DolceDolce’s Q&A chat with Catherine Urbanek:

DD:  Who do you play in the film and do you like her?

CU: I play Kelli Ann Brown, campaign manager to the dark horse presidential

candidate Samantha Clemons (portrayed by Melissa Fitzgerald).

Kelli grew up in Des Moines, her father is a state representative,

and she is a passionate patriot. After attending law school,

Kelli works for her father in Des Moines until she joins Samantha’s run

for the presidency. Kelli is smart, independent, strong and loyal. I like her very much!

DD: Did any real person inspire you portrayal of your character?

CU: Not in particular, no. But I did watch the documentary Caucus

and I read Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin,

and  Race of a Lifetime by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

Both sources were eye-opening about the Iowa caucus as well as the

complexity of the American election process. There’s a lot of drama!

DD:  Who of your fellow cast mates surprised you most and how?

CU: I really loved working with everyone on set, both the cast and crew.

That’s such a tough question! I had worked with Brandon Jones previously

in a project I wrote and produced for my YouTube channel called

Too Much Clay Matthews about a Packers fan and a Bears fan on a date.

He is always wonderful. Brian Haley is a friend of mine and has been a working

actor for many years. I learned so much working on the film with him, too.

I have great respect for the talent of both Melissa Fitzgerald and Gina Belafonte.

Sally Kirkland is another amazing talent and truly awe inspiring.

I think Carolyn Hennesy’s portrayal of a former NY governor was

one of my favourites overall. Carolyn’s hilarious and her choices are so specific.

She’s a delight. What I especially enjoyed was the opportunity to work

with such a strong cast of female actresses. It was a dream.

DD: What are your fashion must-haves for everyday?

CU: I love jeans. A great pair of jeans is really all you need,

with a good wedge shoe. Boom, done.

DD: What is your favourite red carpet look?

I like being surprised and seeing something unexpected on the red carpet.

One day, I want to sport a tux with red lipstick and Lauren Bacall hair. Recently,

I thought Cate Blanchett was a scene stealer in her floral Armani gown at this year’s Oscars.

DD: What is the secret of your fitness routine?

Music! If I have great music to listen to, I can work out for hours.

There’s nothing better than a driving beat or some heavy rock n roll

to inspire you through a workout. I do spin 3-4 times a week, combined

with Pilates and weight-training. I stretch with a foam roller every day. Man, is that thing painful but it really gets the kinks out.

DD: What are your favourite beauty must-haves?

I’ve been using Bare Minerals foundation on my skin for 8 years.

I moisturise daily, both my face and body.

I love pine scented bar soap in the shower.  Givenchy Play Intense is my go-to scent.

DD: What is always in your hand-bag?

Hand sanitiser, lip balm, face powder compact, mints and pepper spray

DD: Share three of your best fashion or beauty tips?

Learn how to dry your hair properly with a round brush.

If you can make your hair look great, that’s half the battle.

Organise your closet so you have outfits that can be your go-to when you’re in a rush.

Eat well and exercise. If you take care of yourself on the inside, it shows on the outside.

Cookies are amazing now and then, but having confidence in a strong and healthy body is even better
