Nigeria’s kidnapped girls

Click top title to open the item and scroll   Ever since I heard about the young girls who were kidnapped by terrorists in Nigeria, I have not been able to put their plight out of mind. I know this is but one of the many atrocities that that happens daily, but their young faces haunt me. An old friend from high school also had the schoolgirls on his mind. He asked some ‘Millennials’ what they thought about the situation; none had heard about it. What’s more depressing is that 20-year-olds are not the only ones who are unaware of the threat confronting many women who seek education.

Boko Harem’s name, if you don’t already know, means “Western Education is a Sin.” They have kidnapped and killed males, students, tourists, and Islamic leaders who don’t agree with them. It makes me shudder to think how these terrorists are treating the young girls they took. They have already threatened to sell them.

I am frustrated as I know my sympathy and sadness over this matter is of no practical use. But I urge anyone who is not educated on the problems and abuse women face to please get informed. It is the least we can do.9781250045287

Uprising: The New Age is Dawning for Every Mother’s Daughter is a new book by Sally Armstrong. I have met Sally, a sincere and inspiring woman who cares deeply about her work. Sally is a human rights activist and journalist who has traveled the world documenting the plight of women. Her book is full of detailed and often shocking accounts, gathered through her own first-hand reporting, of the abuse of women face.

Sally is also a three-time Amnesty International Canada award winner and a member of the Order of Canada, one of the greatest honours Canada confers on its most accomplished citizens.

Uprising documents the abuse women deal with, but also tells how women are working to change things. If you feel uninformed about these issues this book is trove of information.

Make time for the things you enjoy and the people you love because, my darlings, that is truly where the sweet life lies.
