Celebrity hair stylist Jennifer Yepez of The Wall Group, recently created this look for model Joan Smalls at WSJ. Magazine 2014 “Innovator of the Year” Awards at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Yepez explained the inspiration behind the soft, sexy waves she created for Smalls: “Since all eyes would be on Joan, the cover girl for the WSJ Magazine 2014 Innovators issue, we wanted to keep Joan’s hair looking soft, chic and classy – yet not too done – to match the Chanel Couture dress she wore.”               Joan Smalls

Here are how-to instructions:

Prep damp hair by applying René Furterer VOLUMEA volumizing foam – no rinse all over from roots to ends. For curly or wavy hair, use a big round brush to blow dry hair section-by-section. For straight hair, rough-dry the hair with your hands until it’s completely dry.

To protect hair from heat damage before using a curling iron, spritz a thermal protector like René Furterer LISSEA Thermal protecting spray all over.

Starting at the back of your hair, take a section and pin the rest of your hair up. Using a one-inch curling iron, curl your hair from mid-shaft down, keeping the ends of your hair out of the iron. This gives it the undone beachy waves look. Make sure to keep the curling iron vertical to your head to get nice waves. Curl the rest of your hair by unpinning one section at a time.

Once the hair is curled, use a wide tooth comb to comb out your hair into loose waves. Part your hair slightly, and spray René Furterer VEGETAL FINISHING SPRAY over the top of the hair to smooth out any fly-aways, and then lightly all over to keep waves lasting all night long.
