Get a beauty boost from a mid winter break

In the desert a hat and sunblock SPF 50 is basic. As the cold winter winds blow many of you may be heading off for a sojourn in the sun. A mid-winter break can be fabulous, but if you don’t adjust your beauty routine for the strong tropical sun or the dry desert air, your sunny break could play havoc with your looks and may even cause serious damage.

·        Sunscreen is essential. Select one with antioxidants. It has been shown that screens alone don’t effectively prevent photo-aging and damage caused by UV rays. Neutrogena Ageshield, La Roche-Posey Anthelia 60 MeltIn Sunscreen Lotion and Topix Citrix Antioxidant Sunscreen are all good ones to try. www.skinstore.com

·        Use a bronzer with anti-oxidants and sunscreen to look healthy and sun-kissed while treating your skin at the same time. Try a light natural look in the desert for daytime: think tinted moisturizer, a pink- or peach-toned bronzer and a lip gloss with SPF included. Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Pressed Bronzer is a value-priced bronzer and one of favourites. It looks fabulous, comes in two natural shades, and will give you a gorgeous glow as it self-tans, too. It has antioxidants as well as well an SPF to retard the aging effects of the sun. www.physiciansformula.com

·        For sexy glossed lips try L’Oreal Paris Infallible Never Fail Plumping Lip Gloss. It come in six fabulous sexy shades, but wear it over a high SPF balm such as Eco Lips 30. www.ecolips.com www.lorealusa.com www.loreal.ca

·        Don’t overdo your eye make-up on an outdoor vacation or you’ll look ghoulish. Stick with mascara and liner. Lancôme Definicils, CoverGirl Lash Blast Length or L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion are all good choices. Try a smear resistant liner such as L’Oreal HiP in black, brown, or grey for a look that is casual and sexy. Pack a metallic or two for evenings. You’ll look fabulous. www.lorealusa.com www.loreal.ca www.lancome.com www.covergirl.ca www.covergirl.com

·        The desert and tropical sun is strong and a tan provides no additional protection from harmful rays, so use a sun screen with a minimum SPF of 30 and reapply frequently.

·        If you need to be tanned to feel fabulous, consider having your self-tanner professionally applied if you tend to streak it. Or use one of the great self-tanners made for home use at least two weeks before your trip, so you’ll have time to even out your “tan”. Remember gradual self-tanners that work a little bit each day are an easy and natural-looking option. Do not go too dark; that look is passé. Settle for a glow. I do not tan at all, but L’Oreal Sublime Bronze is a staff favourite. It comes in different shades, smells good, and is well-priced. Sun Sauce is another favourite, but harder to find and pricier. For gradual tanning, Jergens Natural Glow was the winner. www.lorealusa.com  www.loreal.ca

·        Remember it takes least two ounces of sun screen to adequately protect your body; think of a small shot glass. Also reapply at least once every hour in strong light.

·        If you hate the greasy feel of some sun blocks, buy a dry spray sun screen with a high SPF– and use it. We like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sun block.

·        Consider a broad brim hat for touring or sports such as golf or riding to protect your face, neck, and ears.

·        Highly sun-sensitive people will need sun-blocking clothing as sun block alone may not be enough in the strong desert or tropical sun.

Yelomod visor and sport top, there are t-shirts and hats too·        Consider buying a hat or visor from Yelomod or Blumod to take on a sunny vacation. This is a line of hats and clothes from Canada that turn the high-powered sun into a beauty treatment. This high-tech line converts sunlight to anti-aging/anti-acne treatments.  This is cutting-edge science.www.sunsoul.com/

·        A visit to an extreme climate is not the time to up your exfoliation routine or try any treatments that might make your skin hypertensive or photosensitive. Dry desert air and harsh sun can fry your baby face. Unless you are staying at a top spa under supervision, stick to gentle cleansers and light but effective moisturizers. You will need a moisturizer that seals water into your skin to keep it from being absorbed by the constant A/C or dry desert air; look for hyaluronic acid and blends of light non-acnegenic oils to use alone with your regular regime. Try HollyBeth’s Rose and Geranium Face Cream.  I use this rich organic cream over my own anti-aging creams at night to seal in more moisture that would be stolen by dry air while I sleep.  It is rich, and a jar lasts forever. Olay Regenerist DNA Superstructure SPF 25 and Clarins HydraQuench Cream are super-rich and have sun screen in them. They are fabulous at sealing in moisture. I would also use an additional sunscreen in strong sunlight, but both are fabulous in dry climates, such as over-heated and dry air-conditioned rooms and planes. http://hollybeth.net, www.olay.com www.olay.ca www.clarins.com

·        If you colour your hair, don’t forget to protect it from the sun too. Use one of the new sunscreens for hair or wear a hat. Too much direct sun can fade colour and dry your hair. Phyto Phytoplage Protective Beach Spray contains UVB and UVA sun screens, botanicals and olive oil extracts to protect and condition your hair.

·        Drink water flat or fizzy and skip calories from cocktails, juice or smoothies. Need a treat? Try a zero-calories flavoured water.

·        If you are visiting a place like Vegas where there is “party scene," try not to overdo food or drink. Keep hydrated. You will look and feel so much more fabulous if you are not hung over. Do not drink in the heat; alcohol and sun do not mix.

Antioxident rich, moist andSPF 25·        If you are tempted to skip your sun screen, remember that after age 35, even brief sun exposure can result in age spots that can be difficult and pricey to remove. The same thing can happen to younger women on any type of hormones such as the pill. Keep your sun screen with you and reapply it often.

·        Work out early in the day or indoors. Take a class and try something new. You can change your attitude, outlook, and body in a short time. Why not come from a winter break feeling really good about yourself and your body?

Use your time away to renew yourself mind, body and spirit. Try to shut off all the outside distractions of daily emails and cell phones. Unplug and tune in to your inner rhythm. Spend time enjoying your partner if you go with one. Be in the moment. If you can’t shut off completely, restrict the use of electronics to a specific window each day and then banish the gadgets!

Read, relax and renew. Welcome new experiences. Darlings, you will be surprised at the glow you have when you return from your break!
