How to save big on your dream wedding dress

Josie Daga Josie Daga has attended 100 weddings and has been a bridesmaid 14 times. She knows all about weddings and admits she is “sucker” for them.

She started preownedwedding dresses.com when

she wanted to sell her own wedding gown. She believes pre-owned gowns can be a great way to get what you want for a good price. We agree it’s an interesting option as wedding costs skyrocket. We checked out her site and the gowns are stunning!

Josie shares her tips for buying the (preowned) dress of your dreams.

DD: Why did you start PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com?
JD: I wanted to sell my own designer wedding dress but couldn’t find a resource. I tried eBay, Craigslist, message boards, and consignment shops — all with no luck. I decided if there was no method available to sell my gown, I would create one. I built the site and sold my dress five months later.

DD: Do you carry designer gowns?
JD: Yes. We have more than 8,000 gowns listed, and more than 250 wedding dress designers available, including Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Amsale, Lazaro, Jim Hjelm, just to name a few.

DD: Can brides find the newest styles, or only older dresses?
JD: PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com has simple classic sheaths and dramatic, beaded ball gowns, and everything in between. Brides can use our advanced search to find gowns with the criteria they are looking for. Shop by designer, size, neckline, silhouette, sleeve style, price, location, you name it.

Brides can definitely find “up-to-the-minute styles,” and we often have the same gowns that celebrities have worn.

DD: What is the price range on your site?
JD: We have dresses from $100 to $10,000. There is literally something for every bride.

DD: What are the potential savings with a pre-owned wedding dress?
JD: Gowns that have been worn typically start at 50 percent off. Unworn gowns and samples tend to start at 25 percent off retail. The discounts can also increase from there. On our “Best Deals” page, brides can find gowns from 80 to 95 percent off the retail price.

DD: What condition are the preowned dresses in? Have they been dry-cleaned?
JD: About 25 percent of PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com listings are new and unworn. They are in pristine condition. The remaining gowns are samples or wedding gowns that have been worn for approximately five hours. The vast majority of the gowns that have been worn have been dry-cleaned and are in excellent condition.

DD: How do you purchase a preowned wedding dress from the site?
JD: Our site is a listing service only. We connect the buyer and seller and they negotiate directly and perform the transaction between themselves. I’ve heard more than a few stories of brides becoming friends over the sale, and have even heard of one bride inviting the previous dress owner to her wedding!

DD: Can you return a dress if there’s an issue?
JD: PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com is not involved in any transaction. But we do strongly recommend that buyers and sellers use Escrow.com because it offers meaningful protection for both parties. The Escrow.com process allows a return for any reason.

DD: What advice would you give someone who wants to sell her wedding dress?
JD: I would tell her three things: Sell it within 2.5 years of purchase – that’s when you’ll get the most for it; Fill your listing with as many details as possible – pictures and a rich description go a long way in telling a bride how lovely your gown is; Feel good knowing that your dress will have another happy day instead of being tucked away in a closet for years.
