Trend alert: Matte red lips

How to get perfect matte red lips

Matte red lipstick is one of this season’s strongest beauty trends. The look is sophisticated, but also sexy and fresher than a heavily-glossed lip.  For a perfect matte red lip you need to follow a few simple steps:

Exfoliate your lips. Matte lip colour shows up all the little dry bits and dead skin. You should do this any way.

Lip smoothers to try:

Clarins Extra-Firming Lip & Contour Gentle Exfoliator, $31.

Paula’s Choice Extra-Firming Lip & Contour Gentle Exfoliator, $10

My homemade lips scrub:

Place in a clean pretty jar:

½ cup brown sugar (sugar is healing and mildly abrasive)

2 tbsp. of sunflower, safflower, or olive oil

A few drops of rose oil or sweet orange essential oil, but not perfume oil (omit of you prefer unscented)

Rub over lips gently before brushing teeth as this is made with sugar.

Using a lip liner can look old fashioned. Instead, apply your matte lipstick with a steady hand. Use a lip brush if you need one to define the shape. If you have never used a lip brush, you can easily get a lesson at any MAC counter. Or, just buy one and practice.  I never use a brush as I find a tube works fine.

If you must line your lips, use a nude pinky-brown pencil that matches your own lip colour. A red pencil will stay behind as the lipstick wears off or shows through. Be sure to blot. The perfect matte red lip should look “bitten”.

Use a lip plumper or conditioner at night to keep your lips smooth and soft. Two we like:

–          Chapstick Moisturizer Hydration Lock with CQ10 and plumping spheres

–          CITY Lips Advanced Formula Lip Plumper in clear plumps with HA Plumping Spheres + Collagen Peptides
