Exercise and nature – a winning combo!

Gracey Hitchcock

Gracey Hitchcock

When I lived in Moscow, I developed a new appreciation

for “Nature” and “Nature  Lovers”.

My Russian friends always stopped to appreciate the wonders

of the great outdoors.  Having a “Dacha”

or country house – however simple or grand

— was a luxury.

How wise my friends were in their love of the outdoors.

I know nature and country get-a-ways are loved around the world.

But, I have never to this day heard so many people extoll the

their love of the country as I  did in four years in Moscow.   And it seems they-

and all nature lovers were right.

There is significant new research on the benefits of exercising

outside in the great outdoors. According to Phys Ed Columnist

for the New York Times Gretchen Reynolds, “Studies haven’t yet

established why, physiologically, exercising outside might improve

‘dispositions or inspire greater commitment to an exercise program”.

In the same article she added, “A few small studies have found that

people have lower blood levels of cortisol, a hormone related to stress,

after exerting themselves outside as compared with inside.”

So while, I am not giving up my barre or yoga classes – and I am

not suggesting you either – don’t underestimate the value of walking

to the gym or after dinner with a friend or lover.  We tend over

complicate things these days – and in doing so we may miss a lot of benefits.

Final days of summer

The final days of summers are speeding  by

as we look up to see Virgo in the sky.

Here in the South, children are alreadt back to school.

Up North, they count the days.

Summer play always goes too quickly for me.

Slow down enjoy the warmth — winter is cold and long.

Life should sweet but you need work at it too.

Beautiful inside out

HALOGLOWGRACEY

For years I have written about and said that there has never been a better time to be a woman. We have more choices and better health care options than ever before.

As a health and beauty editor I have never seen better or more affordable choices. And we are all smarter. We know that health equals beauty and sun screen is the best skin beautifier. It also prevents skin cancer. There are no short cuts or cheats.

We have lotions, potions and hair care – at all prices. But none of them will help erase the damage done by smoking, a bad diet, or a lack of sleep and exercise. Exercise for even a few days and see how much better your skin looks; a result of all the additional oxygen and blood flow.

None of this is new thinking; our great grandmothers struggled with sunbonnets and gloves. I have old books on health and housekeeping that give the same advice about diet. But it is all easier today with sun screen and super markets. So be smart and be beautiful, darlings – inside and out.

Take time to enjoy the sweetness in life.

Fake it

Gracey Hitchcock,

Double click the topmost title to open

I loved Star Wars: The Force: Awakens

And if you haven’t heard, Carrie Fisher doesn’t look like

Princess Leia anymore. And why in the world would she?

She was cast as Princess Leia in 1977. She wore the now infamous

slave girl costume in 1983.  Do the math.

Even before the movie opened Fisher was subjected to cruel and

stupid remarks about her appearance. Carrie Fisher is a 59 year-old

actress playing opposite Harrison Ford who is 73.

For the record, Harrison Ford still a very handsome man but

he doesn’t look like Hans Solo anymore either – maybe Hans’s father.

And Carrie Fisher looks just fine. I can’t say if she looks like Princess Leia or not because her hair was not in that ridiculous earmuff style that identified the character.

Fisher is not taking the attacks on her appearance silently. She is fighting

back in interviews and on twitter. Fisher shot back at critics  saying, “Youth and beauty are not accomplishments. They’re temporary by-products [sic] of time and/or DNA”.

This is has been a nasty little media tussle and a demonstration of the  bullying that has become the norm today.Fisher is a strong, smart, and outspoken woman. She knows how to hit back.

One of the nastiest and most gratuitous attacks came from Fox News’Bill O’Reilly who actually said, in discussing the movie, “ But it comes

out worse for our friend Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia, because she  doesn’t look like Princess Leia.”  O’Reilly actually followed these nasty

comments with the assertion that he “likes” Fisher. One can only wonder how he talks about people he doesn’t like.

Granted women are most often the victims of body shaming, but it happens  to men these days too. It has been normal for people to attack anyone

they don’t like any way they want – and there is no penalty, until someone dies.

Politicians mock and insult their opposition’s appearance in the crudest

manner and are applauded. These same politicians and media types then

later wring their hands over school bullying. Grow up people and set an example.

Just because Fisher can hit back doesn’t mean such attacks don’t hurt.

They always hurt and tolerating attacks on anyone or any group hurts us all.

Let’s all grow up. Treat people with kindness and tolerance.

And if you don’t feel kind and tolerant, fake it until you do.

Take time to enjoy the sweetness in life.

Go away, little Grinch!

Darlings, I know it has been a rough year!

DolceDolce.com readers know that my heart breaks for the victims

of terrorism, hate, discrimination and poverty.

But, suggestions I have read to cut out decorating and gift giving are

written in a righteous tone and get my ire up.

I believe the best way fight darkness is with light!

So deck your halls! Give your gifts! They shouldn’t cost a fortune.

There is a reason all cultures and most (excepting fanatical sects)

religions light the darkest season and feast in the cold – and it is to reaffirm life! Just tell the little Grinches in your life to go away!

Now my darlings, this should break the bank —

as my dear friend and finance Guru Buffie Purselle would say

– don’t go “Ballin if you should be financially crawling” but celebrate!

Open your heart, light your lights, and let your heart and your love shine.

No matter you’re what your affiliation or faith this is truly a joyful time!

Share with those in need and celebrate with those you hold dear!

Embrace autumn

Graceypumpkins

Click the topmost title and scroll to read

I finally have that fall feeling. It comes later than I am used to in the south,

But it is here now, so I am going to make pumpkin and late harvest tomato soup for lunch on chilly afternoons.

I like to fill my house with the fragrance of cinnamon and cardamom. Later today, I will arrange colour small gourds and pumpkins with candles. I want to truly embrace Autumn before rushing into the Holidays.

Celebrate fall

Click on the topmost title to open and scrollGracey Hitchcock,

Don’t miss fall! Before long it will too late to walk in the crisp air, buy apples from an orchid and drink just-pressed sweet cider. This is a magical time of year when rhea harvest comes in and nature displays the fruits of her bounty. Make jam or pressures even in a small batch.

Visit a farmers market or local fairs and taste the season.
