Respect

Gracey Hitchcock,Click on the topmost title to open and scroll to open

No one is perfect. We all mess up sometimes. May be we feel overwhelmed or have take on too much –or we just mess up and hurt someone. If we are smart we straighten things out and if necessary make amends. But, the ebb and flow of this type of behaviour should be very limited.

When it comes to being on time, respect, kindness and all the little niceties that make up a friendship if the scales are not balanced, you might be the problem. Because, my darlings – and I am guilty of this, too – people will treat the way you let them.

So if friends are careless with your friendship, gently remind them of the missed appointment or other offence. Don’t lecture but be firm about the problem. If a friend or colleague is dismissive of your work or help – and this happened to me recently – don’t offer it so easily again, no matter how sweetly they ask. Believe me, no matter how coolly they receive the information people get the message. This isn’t about playing a game of tit-for-tat – it is about standing up for your value and demanding to be treated as you deserve. When it comes to respect, actions speak louder than words.

Breaking rules is an art

Gracey HitchcockClick on the topmost title and scroll

This season perhaps more than any other I remember –there is no single one look The old rules have been tossed out. While winter white as long been an option; this fall designers are offering cool weather bags and shoes in chalk white. Sometimes this look works and other times it falls flat. The same can be said for mixing prints and wearing sandals with socks. Breaking rules and looking chic is an art. You have to develop your eye.

Enjoy the last days of summer.

Savour late harvest fruit, it is always so sweet.

Easy does it

graceyhitchcockClick topmost title to open and scroll

As the summer days fly by – all too quickly for me – I marvel at how many people still seek complicated answers to simple problems. We can niggle about details, but at the end of the day feeling good and looking good begins with simple things: a healthful diet of fresh food and a little less of it than most of us want to eat after a certain age. Exercise every day. And apply sunscreen every day. So, don’t resist the simple solution. This is the best time of the year to toss together a fresh, simple dinner with full of tempting fresh salads and fruits. Move and play – joyfully. If you hate sunscreen go shopping – there are dry sprays and even powders. I promise there is one with your name on it. It’s easy and it should be.

Make summer memories. It will be fall before you know it.

Luxury

Gracey HitchcockClick on the topmost title to open and scroll

How do you define luxury? The definition is changing all the time. Not too long ago, one simply bought seat on an airplane. It was first come – first served. Now, luxury may be an upgrade to a slightly better seat in a crowded economy cabin.

Given these changes luxury is often the space and sensations we create for ourselves. It may be setting aside time to think, walk or to enjoy a favourite hobby.  This time-out can feel blissful –like playing hooky.    Luxury can also be simple. Languishing clean fresh sheets or a hot bath with exotic oils are two of my own luxurious indulgence. Cashmere, good perfume, and grown up toys are all very nice too –and please some of my favourite people.

So now when things seem to be all about leaning in and cutting back – I am going to tell you to luxe up a little. Create a little softness around yourself.

Life is too short not to be sweet.

Renewal

graceyhitchcockClick on the topmost title to open

This is the season of renewal, new beginnings, and hope.  It is the perfect time to re-new yourself with a healthy approach to life.

But instead of charging in and bashing away at yourself like a drill sergeant, try a more holistic, spa-like approach.   Be gentle with yourself as you embrace changes.

Exercising and eating better might give you a few aches and pains but you shouldn’t feel like you‘ve been beaten up.  The point is to renew, not wreck, yourself.

Take time to enjoy the sweetness in life.

Follow the fads or don’t

Click on top title to open and scroll  I just finished reading an essay in Town and Country.  It was about the pressure an editor felt to cut her hair and fall in line with a current trend. By now, I am sure she feels vindicated in resisting. The fall collections had plenty of flowing locks and looped chignons. The editor described being at a presentation with a famous hair stylist who kept going on about being “so sick of long hair”.  A few seasons ago the “big news” was that straight hair “was so over” and before that an equally famous stylist was “sick of curls”.

I am not making fun of anyone; artists need change. Without change there is no innovation. But adopting change simply for the sake of keeping up with trends is self-defeating, which brings us to Lauren Bacall.

 Remembering Lauren Bacall

As I finish this issue, I have just heard the news that the great actress Lauren Bacall has died at the age of 89. She was without doubt one of the world’s most stylish women.

 Lauren Bacall

Bacall was first discovered by the legendary Diana Vreeland while she was an editor at Harper’s Bazaar. Bacall was then 16-year-old model. It was that discovery that led to Bacall going to Hollywood for a screen test.

If you look at the cover that Diana Vreeland had shot with Lauren Bacall you will see the tailored clothes and trademark side-parted waves that Bacall is known for today.

Lauren BacalI was lauded as one of the world’s most stylish women for decades. Yet, her look barely varied over the years.  As I viewed photos of her through the years, I noticed at times her hair was a bit shorter or darker and her makeup subtly follows the trends of the time, but once Bacall found her style, she stuck to it. And she never looked dated.

So darlings, update your look. It is essential to keep current. Small tweaks to your makeup and clothing silhouettes are enough to keep your look fresh. Flip through the photo essays on Lauren Bacall to see how an expert did it. And if a new fad doesn’t suit you, pass on it. That’s what Betty Bacall did.

Make time for the things you enjoy and the people you love because, my darlings that is truly where the sweet life lies.
