Fast fall fashion update

A red print dress like this one from Ali Ro is a perfect update for fall. www.neimanmarcus.com $225I am just back from New York City where Fashion’s Night Out, the big retail celebration of fall fashion, is alive and well. There were crowds everywhere, waiting for the celebrities and the giveaways, and celebrating fashion.

It was also a reminder that fall is here and it is time to update your look. This autumn you may want to:

Add a touch of romance to your look
If you have ever dreamed of wearing a flouncy Edwardian lace-trimmed blouse, a pert little velvet jacket, or fancy dress gloves, this is the time to go for it. Think “Gilded Age,” the period of prosperity after the Civil War, but for a modern look mix your romantic items with tailored modern separates.

Get booted
Boots are this fall’s must-have item. If you buy only one pair, get them in shiny black or oxblood. Plan to wear them with everything. A good boot is essential and an easy update for fall. Heels don’t have to be sky high; you can opt for slouchy boots with chunky or flat heels, too.

Look like a lady
Be sure to have a chic dress or two in your closet. Make one a sexy, dark floral print and the other lace or leather trimmed. And you can’t go wrong with black and white. Try a sharp black and white print or simple white dress trimmed and belted in black.

Get pant-suited
If you prefer trousers to dresses, you are in luck. Pant suits are back. For a fashion-forward look choose one with a tailored jacket, slim trousers, and small all-over print a la Prada.

Smarten up your look with military inspired wardrobe items
Look for dresses, jackets, and coats with epaulettes and gold buttons. This is the time to indulge in a dramatic-looking cape, if you have always wanted one. You can also refresh the look of any tailored coat or jacket by replacing plain buttons with shiny gold buttons. This subtle but easy update gives clothes a military flavour. If you are slender, you can add a good looking leather belt to a straight coat or jacket.

Add some colour to your life
Black will always be basic, but this season stand out in a stunning red dress, oxblood leather jacket, plaid skirt, or fabulous paisley frock.

And finally, don’t forget your hat
Make it a broad-brimmed fedora for fall, and then a Russian fur topper – faux or not – when the mercury drops.
