Romance and fashion are in the air

Prince William and Kate Middleton Image Courtesy of Clarence House, Mario TestinoI remember Diana’s wedding. I had married about a week earlier, that summer of 1981. As my husband and I honeymooned in the south of France, we joined a small group of friendly strangers in front of an electronics store. We watched on a TV set in the window, as Prince Charles and his bride exchanged vows.

It was a wonderful, romantic summer for us and the world. Everyone seemed to fall in love with the shy princess – a pretty young woman who loved fashion and looked fabulous in practically anything. Women all over all over the world copied Diana’s style.

Soon, Prince William will marry Kate Middleton. And even if you are not a “royal watcher” there’s nothing like a big regal wedding to put romance and fashion in the air!

It is also the perfect time to indulge your feminine side. Dress yourself in a floral frock, if it suits you. Florals are some of the hottest looks this season. Try a simple straight floral skirt with cool white shirt for work, and a floral sheath for a cocktail party or dinner. If you have a wedding or other big occasion this summer, go all out with a garden party dress and a hat. Some of the most gorgeous floral occasion dresses are from Lanvin and Carolina Herrera. We also love the inexpensive floral day and cocktail dresses from Maggie London, Donna Rico, and Ralph Lauren.

Match your shoes or bag, not both, to a colour in the print for a look that pops. Or, go for a metallic gold sandal with a Grecian line. If heels hurt your feet, look chic in pretty flat gilded sandals or sweet kitten heel sling-backs. Even if you have a dazzling pedicure, you will look more ladylike with your shoes on at a formal affair, so make sure they are comfy.

As the mercury rises go for a light floral scent. We are madly in love with the new Floral Fragrance Collection from Crabtree & Evelyn. The scents are divine and the packaging is so elegant it seems to be from another era. You will feel like a glamorous Hollywood star from the silver-screen days when you spritz yourself with the stunning glass atomizer, or reach for your body cream and powder in their stylish 1940s-inspired containers. The line looks much more expensive than it is. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the body products ranged from $21 to $45 U.S.

The line contains a wardrobe of unique florals including Lily, Lavender, Rosewater, and Iris. The fragrances are light, but have a full range of complex scent notes from top to bottom. These aromas are exciting, sophisticated — nothing like the old-fashioned florals you may remember.

There is a delightful eau de toilette that’s perfect to spritz on from early spring through the steamiest summer. Also in the line is a heavenly scented shower and bath gel in a pretty floral bottle, and triple-milled scented soap. The body lotion has rose hip and evening primrose oil, as well shea butter. It is one of loveliest and most addictive body lotions we have ever used. It leaves skin lightly-scented and feeling like silk! There is also a rich body cream and silken dusting powder, both elegantly presented. All these products contain the finest ingredients that leave skin feeling pampered.

The Crabtree & Evelyn Floral Collection will delight your senses. It is perfection to light one of their lavender candles and lie back after a scented bath or shower to renew your body and soul with a soothing ritual. It helps to make beauty a meditation before drifting off for the night, or dressing up for a night out.

This summer give in to your inner romantic. Stop short of a tiara, but why not wear a hat? So many women want to, but fear they would look silly. They opt instead for visors or baseball caps. Darlings, this year get a fabulous hat. Try one from Eric Javits, if you can afford it. You can abuse them and they look great for years! If you are on a budget or are a sporty type, look at Tilley Endurables. I have had one of their hats for years and it still looks fabulous. Or, just pin a flower in your hair.

Eric Javits hat --always chicBraids are a big summer trend again. They can be a perfect way to fight the frizzies. Experiment! Don’t settle for good enough – be bold. Learn to French-braid your hair, or pull it into a flattering chignon. Collect some great hair ornaments and pin them in.

Romantic doesn’t have to mean frilly, if that isn’t you. Access your inner cowgirl and look stunning in denim and turquoise. If you are the more tailored type, channel Grace Kelly or Katherine Hepburn. You can look cool and classic in sharp white high-waisted trousers and a fabulous scarf.

Give into romance and fashion, darlings! Take a chance, play a role, and have some fun. After all, it is in the air.
