Forget the bucket list

12graceysmallDarlings life is short no matter how long you live. And if you have heard it once, you must have heard it a million times: at the end of life most people who have regrets pine for the things they didn’t do, not the things they did. Forget making a bucket list. Start working on your passions today in big and small ways.

Make time for the things you enjoy and the people you love because, my darlings, that is truly where the sweet life lies.

Get dressed and go!

Gracey HitchcockMaybe a dress just isn’t for you. That’s fine. Just recently, a chic, smart woman executive told me she can’t wait until she wears jeans and a t-shirt every day. For now, her look is impeccably-tailored suits, usually with slim trousers in black and grey. When she does retire, I am certain her jeans will fit to perfection. The lady has a look. And that is point.

Darlings, find a look that makes you feel fabulous and confident. For special occasions get one that makes you feel special. If fashion overwhelms you, get someone to help you. My very chic friend Marie likes the personal shoppers at Nordstrom’s. She says they will work on a budget and make shopping painless.

The point of getting your look nailed is to free you up to think about other things. Once you have it all organized, all you have to do is get dressed and go.

Beauty’s friend

Gracey HitchcockAll too often women who are threatened by the idea of beauty dismiss it as too much trouble or vain. But, as the recent Australian study shows much of what makes skin beautiful is healthful. The same sunscreen that protects your skin from deadly cancer is also one of your best beauty treatments. The same can be said for a healthful diet and exercise. Healthful habits are a beauty’s best friend.

Style is forever

Gracey HitchcockDarlings, a few years back, men of style stopped renting tuxedos. Rentals never fit right and a good tux is timeless. Many men caught on, and bought themselves a quality evening rig. It can be an outlay, but they wear it for years updating with new shirts, ties, and other accessories. And they always look fabulous.
Now some women are renting everything, even their jewelry and accessories. I think it is a shame. Instead of building a great wardrobe of good evening bags and classic jewelry they are spending money for a single night with nothing to show for it.
There is a great scene in the second Sex and the City movie when Carrie gives her trusted assistant, Louise, her first designer bag, so she can stop renting. Carrie, the consummate fashionista knows the value of owning your own. She hands it to her saying, “no more rentals for you!”
A few good signature pieces can help define your style. Every well-dressed woman knows this. Think of Jacqueline Kennedy and you think of pearls. Grace Kelly had her Kelly bag and Hermes scarves. And do you ever see a Beverly Hills “Housewife” without a great pair of heels? I can promise you they aren’t rented or from the shoe-of-the-month club. And no one ever calls these women dull, if they wear their lovely jewels or designer bags more than once either.
Darlings, you don’t need to be a millionaire to look fabulous or have great style. But you do need to invest in yourself.

Vote your dollar

Darlings I don’t know about you, but I have had enough of craziness when I am trying to get things done. I am sick of non-existent customer service, and I know where to place to the blame. The culpable are not the tired, overworked employees who are often not allowed to solve your problem, but the companies that want to take my money for bad or indifferent service. I am not interested in automated robo-calls from anyone. We need to resist the entire system that has gradually replaced good service.

I write letters, I vote with my dollar, and I encourage you to do the same. The JetBlue incident was not funny; it was a wakeup call.  These days we are almost stripped naked at airports in the name of security. But JetBlue is unaware of highly-stressed and unstable flight attendants who are in charge of flight safety. Think of what may have happened if this person had flipped out in the air.

Too many airlines have abused passengers and staff for too long. They need to be regulated. I am old enough to remember when flying was pleasant, and a coach flight was as nice business class is now. Attendants and passengers were civil. Those days seem to be gone, but I refuse to believe things cannot change for the better.

Life is too short to be miserable or to put up with nonsense. Fire the abusers. Let’s make travel sweet again.

A walk in the park and a kiss after dark

Darlings, make time for your friends. Nourish your friendships. Even science has shown that good friends help to keep you healthy and happy all through your life. Don’t let work and stress steal your relationships from you.  Every day can be a small celebration. Share a glass of wine and a sunset, a cocktail, and a cuddle, or a walk in the park and a kiss after dark (yes, that is an old song!). Life is short, so make it sweet!
