The art of the blowout

Angela D'amario with her stylsit Jamila and her freshky blown doNow that blow dry bars are springing up all over the place, do you ever wonder how much more fabulous a professional blow dry is than one you do yourself? Blow dry bars specialize in styling hair. They don’t cut it or colour it; they dry it, pouf it, and even put it up. They are quick, and at about $35 dollars, are relatively less expensive than salons. Many serve cocktails, too.
Our own Angela D’Amario visited the Drybar for an evening of fun and styling. Here is Angela’s report:

I often fantasize about how much more free time I would have every day if I never needed to style my own hair. My mane is curly and thick, and — beyond wearing it in its naturally wavy form — a pain to tame. Oh, how I envy ladies like Amber Rose who look fabulous bald!

Last week, I visited Drybar, a wash-and-dry-only salon, for the first time. Blow-dry bars have been popping up in major cities across the U.S. They cater to busy women who want hair perfection in a breeze.

While there, I imagined how wonderful it would be to never have to wash and style my own hair again. I asked my stylist, Jamila, whether I could get by with a weekly blowout if I used dry shampoo. Jamila said those with less-oily scalps could do it, so I gave it a go. I was only able to make it four days before jumping head first into the shower to feel the relief of real shampoo.
Drybar is a fantastic option for looking picture-perfect for several days at social events, such as weddings, vacations, and during the holiday-party season. Drybar offers nearly 10 different styles, all cleverly named for cocktails, at $35 per blowout. From curly to straight to up styles, they have a look for every occasion.
I have a wedding next month, so I’ll be booking my Florida-ready blowout soon. I’m thinking Drybar’s beach-wave look.

Beauty on the go

Instant shampoo is a fabulous beauty blast from the past. It is back and better than ever. One of my favourites is Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk. It leaves your hair smelling fresh and sweet as it removes any traces of cooking or last night’s party. The oat milk soothes your scalp, and corn and rice starch remove oil and grime. Now there is no excuse for ever leaving your house with flat, greasy hair.

European women have trust this botanically-based French line for years. Stars such as Christina Aguilera, Rebecca Romijn, and Rashida Jones have become fans too.

Stylists love it because it also adds body to fine hair. Try a top stylist trick and spray some in your roots before trying one of this fall’s big beehives.

Fresh and fab

I can’t stand anything in my hair — not oil, frizz or odor. I am obsessed with clean, shiny hair; I wash and style mine almost daily and have since I was 13. But I also cook a lot, and that can be a disaster for my fresh clean hair. A few minutes over a hot frying pan of savory ingredients can leave my locks smelling like dinner — and that is not appetizing. Also equally disastrous can be a visit to open-kitchen dining spots. A recent visit to wine bar left my clothes and hair smelling like their lamb sliders. That’s when I reach for the dry shampoo until I have time to wash and style my hair.

Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Spray Shampoo leaves hair feeling clean and refreshed without powdery residue. It goes on clean and clear. The new invisible formula quickly absorbs the oily buildup on your scalp and neutralizes any odors. It’s really quick to do — perfect when you only have minutes for a touch-up and a quick change.

Dry shampoos are also a boon for women with dry curly hair or thin hair who want to avoid over-washing and -styling their tresses. If this is your issue, try Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Spray Shampoo, as it is super light and will brush perfectly.

Grafix Dry Spray Shampoo retails for $7.99 and is available at Target, Walgreen’s, Wal-Mart, CVS and other select retailers in the U.S.

A fab fluff

Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo is a fast way to fluff your hair when you don’t have time to wash it. This lemony-scented spray contains no parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, petro-chemicals, phthalates, GMOs, or triclosan. You spray it on and brush it out. The powder spray absorbs excess oil and dirt.

Steal a styling tip from Hollywood pros who stash dry shampoo in their kits to make fine fly-away hair a little "stiffer" and elaborate styles easier to manage. It makes   shiny, clean hair easier to grip and put into an updo or complicated chignon. The dry shampoo can also give fine hair a bit more volume, and help keep bobby pins from slipping out. Be careful not to overdo it, or the hair will look matted.

Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray is also a nice thing to bring to a bedridden or hospitalized friend who can’t wash her hair — yuck. You may want to bring a brush too.

It is not a substitute for the glorious feeling of cool fresh water running over your scalp, but it is a fab fluff!

Darlings, this is not cheap. A small 1.4 oz/38.5g can is $11 US. But what price can you put on beauty – or an itch-free scalp — if you are bedridden?
