That perfect woman across the room

I have always admired Diane von Furstenberg. She is a one-woman fashion phenomenon. In her twenties she launched a fashion empire with a simple silk jersey wrap dress.  That dress is still a classic.

Equally important, Diane von Furstenberg is an inspiration.  Now, in her memoir, she tells how she became “The Woman I Always Wanted to Be”, which also the title of her book. The secret of DVF’s appeal is her ability to share her experience without the “sugar-coating,” as she likes to say.

As I read I marveled at her candor.  She revealed “I’ve known days where I wake up thinking I’m the biggest loser. Other women can feel like that. But know that looking at a woman across the room thinking she’s perfect, realize she’s across the room looking at you thinking you’re perfect.”  It is a simple truth and one we have all heard before, but it gains a new meaning when a woman like Diane von Furstenberg tells you that she too has days when she feels that way.  So, my darlings, as you move through the season, if you find yourself longingly gazing across the room feeling “less than” while looking at a “sea of perfect” think of Diane von Furstenberg and enjoy the woman you. Make time for the things you enjoy and the people you love because, my darlings, that is truly where the sweet life lies.
