Beauty bargain

Celebrate National Relaxation Day this August 15th with two luxurious beauty bargains. After all, who can’t use a little less stress and little more pampering?

Neutrogena Rainbath Refreshing Shower and Bath Gel-Original Scent has a soft, spicy scent with amber notes. It is so special that fragrance cognoscenti rave about it on perfume blogs and forums.  It’s on my must-have list. If you prefer a fruitier, floral scent try one of the newer versions of Neutrogena Rainbath such as Pear and Green Tea.

And if your skin is feeling parched from too much fun in the sun, revive it with Neutrogena Body Oil Light Sesame Formula, a light oil that moisturizes dry skin. It contains sesame oil, which is full of essential fatty acids, Vitamins A and E, and antioxidants to help skin stay soft and luminous.

So draw a bath, light a candle, and relax – and let stress slip away.

Find both products for less than $10 for a 16-ounce bottle, online or at drug and big box stores.

A new twist on a classic

skinsojpeg.jpgClick on the top line of titles to open each item!  Chances are you grew up with a bottle of Avon’s Skin So Soft bath oil in your house. Before organic and chemical products were so common many chemical-adverse moms even used it as mosquito repellant. Some people still swear by it for that purpose today. I am a mosquito magnet and it has never kept them from biting me. But I love Skin So Soft as bath oil after a long soak. I have been a devotee of beauty oils long before they became trendy. (Google DolceDolce.com beauty oils to find our reviews and picks.) Now this classic has been enriched with jojoba. It still has a soft amber-musk scent with an herbal top note.   Skin So Soft is available in large bottles as well as spray bottles. At $13 or less for 16 ounces it is a classic beauty bargain.

FTHjpgThere are many reasons that hair can begin to thin and fall out, including stress, diet, over-processing, genetics, and even serious health problems. Some women experience sudden and temporary hair shedding after pregnancy or going off the pill. Menopause or even perimenopause can cause hair to thin even in women who are in their mid-thirties.  All dramatic hair loss should be reported to your doctor.

If you have thinning hair you might want to try the new Thicker Fuller Hair line of products from Schwarzkopf. The line consists of Revitalizing Shampoo, Moisturizing Shampoo Weightless Conditioner, and Instantly Thicker Hair Serum, Thicker Fuller Hair Cell-U-Plex Root Lift & Bodifying Spray for Fine, Thin Limp Hair as well as Thicker Fuller Hair Weightless Volumizing Hair Spray and Thicker Fuller Hair Weightless Volumizing Hair Spray. The products are priced from $3.99 to $6.99 making this one of the best values we have seen.

The products all contain Cell-U-Plex a blend of botanicals, wheat proteins, and caffeine designed to work together to help prevent hair loss and prevent breakage. These ingredients are similar to those in some of most expensive hair care lines designed to address the problem of thinning hair. Wheat proteins help to strength hair instantly and prevent hair loss from breakage. It also makes hair look instantly thicker by wrapping around the individual strands.

Caffeine has been added to the Cell-U-Plex blend of botanicals to help prevent hair loss. So will it actually help prevent hair loss and help make your hair thicker? It just might. According to government studies topically applied caffeine does help to stimulate hair follicles.

I like this line.  I have thick hair but I am always looking for ways to strengthen my fine hair and prevent damage from colour and heat styling.  The products smell and feel luxurious. Thicker Fuller Hair by Schwarzkopf is true a beauty bargain. You can find it online, at drugstores and big box stores.

neuco.jpgThe Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System uses disposable puffs on a small battery-powered microdermabrasion applicator. You place the puffs, which are covered in ultra-fine crystals, on a small hand-held machine which vibrates to genetly exfloites. Skin is left taut and glowing. For less than about $20, the results are amazing. This is one of my favourite new skin care items and a true beauty bargain. Some people are under the impression that the microdermabrasion system is an alternative to a cleansing brush. It is not. It is a home treatment that you use in place of a scrub.  That means you might use it one to three times a week, depending on your skin type.

Many beauty editors are enthralled by the pricy Clarisonic vibrating cleansing brush. They say it leaves skin super clean. I am not a convert, but if you like the idea try one. Some of my own beauty savvy friends swear by it, but be aware that cleansing brushes can make certain types of breakouts worse. If your skin begins to breakout or looks irritated, give the brush a rest. You have to be very careful with manual exfoliation when you have active breakouts or sensitive skin. Persistent or severe acne needs a doctor! Please do not listen to anyone who tells breakouts are part of the “healing” or your skin is “detoxing.” This is non-science. Acne is a disease.  Acne is hard to treat and is made worse by rough treatment. You cannot squeeze, wash, or muscle it out of your skin. Believe me, ask a person who has had acne for the name of a good doctor.

As a beauty editor I have tried all types of microdermabrasion treatments that have left my skin bloody – which is not pretty or healthy.  Being too aggressive with skin is just as bad as neglecting it. But gentle microdermabrasion is a fabulous addition to any anti-aging skin care régime and the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System is my new favourite way to get it done. Regular microdermabrasion can help make skin look firmer and more luminous, as well as help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Recent studies say it may even help to stimulate collagen and help prevent sagging.

Those are fabulous results from a gadget that costs less than $20, feels wonderful, and takes less than two minutes to use. Look for it in drugstores, big box stores, and online for $20 or less.

The Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System is true beauty bargain!

cantuThis week, we asked DolceDolce’s Neisa Caraway to review Cantu’s Shea Butter leave-in conditioning hair repair cream. Neisa prefers natural products to care for her curly hair, so Cantu was perfect for her. Cantu offers a large range of conditioning and styling products containing natural ingredients such as Shea butter and coconut oil. With products priced at under $10 each,  Cantu is a true beauty bargain.

Here is Neisa’s review:

My lovely Aunt Sonja flew in from San Diego in early August, and we spent the week catching up, reminiscing, sightseeing, and shopping. We had a ball!

On her last day in town she offered to braid my hair, and wouldn’t take no for an answer. So after watching half a season of “Orange is the New Black” on TV my hair was in braids. I always thoroughly enjoy the freedom and ease that braids provide; it’s a true get-up-and-go hair style. No combs, brushes, trimmings, deep conditioners – nothing! All that my aunt instructed me to do was cleanse, moisturize in the morning, and wrap the braids in satin scarves at night. Sounds easy right? Well maybe it is for people who aren’t as hard-headed as me; I got caught up in the ease of it all and neglected my poor hair.

So when I took the braids down my hair was super dry and brittle. Cantu’s Shea Butter leave-in conditioning hair repair cream showed up in my life like a little heavenly gift from my guardian angel. This curly girl-friendly conditioner is free of parabens, silicone, and mineral oil. I apply it to my semi-dry hair with a little coconut oil. This combo leaves my hair smelling like a piña colada with a healthy shine, and above all no frizz.

What I think is best about this product is that it is lightweight. Once my hair dries it’s not limp and greasy, yet my curls are defined. It’s looking a lot better than it did when the braids first came down.

I’m impressed with this product, especially since you can pick up at Walmart for $4.99. I’m looking forward to seeing how it affects my hair in the long run.
