Beat the heat in style

Chrissy VolkSummer is the time to make a splash with style and have fun with fashion, so we asked stylist Chrissy Volk for her take on the season’s must-have items. Chrissy also shared great tips on choosing fabrics to beat the heat! Don’t miss a word, and you’ll be cool and stylish all summer long.
DD: What are your must have items for this summer and why?
CV: There are a few must have items for summer:
1.     The maxi dress and or maxi skirt. The versatility of these pieces will take you through the summer. Both can be worn day or night, with just a quick change of accessories and shoes!
2.     Bright colored clothing. Whether it’s a fuchsia tank or a fluorescent yellow skirt, being bold is the way to go. It will add so much brightness to your summer wardrobe. plus bright hues look excellent contrasted against bronzed skin.
3.     Wedges. The ideal summer sandal! These are so comfortable and you can find them in any wedge height, which makes them perfect for everyone. Whether the wedge is an espadrille, wood, or cork, purchasing a wedge for summer is the way to go!

DD: What are few simple and inexpensive ways to take a look from boring to chic?
CV: I always suggest buying versatile costume jewelry in gold and silver, mixed with colors that you wear often in your wardrobe. This way you can mix and match jewelry with different outfits and it always feels fresh!
1.     Two other really great accessories to purchase this season are belts and scarves. They can add a dimension to any outfit.
2.     Since color is so big this season, pairing a bright, colored bag with a neutral is a great way to spice things up! Pairing a hot pink bag with a nude top, black skirt and black sandals would really add some spice to an outfit.
Of course all of these suggestions could be purchased very inexpensively! No need to break the bank while look chic this summer.

DD: What is your favourite look for a casual evening?

CV: I absolutely love a maxi skirt with a t-shirt or racer back tee. If the fit is right, then a belt would really compliment the outfit. Pair it with flat gladiator-style sandals and great drop or hoop earrings. This is a super-easy look, but the femininity of the skirt and addition of the earrings make it feel slightly elegant.

If maxi skirts aren’t your thing, you can always do a cotton dress with a drawstring waist and a long necklace. This dress style is flattering on all body types and it is super-comfortable as well.

DD: What is always in your hand-bag? And what bag are you carrying this summer?
Lately I have been carrying the Chloe Heloise hobo bag. I always have my sunglasses, chapstick, lip gloss, spare contact lenses, small lint brush and double-sided tape – for emergencies!

DD: What are three of your beauty tips?

1.     Mascara and lining the top lid with eyeliner are the best possible ways to make your eyes pop in an instant.
2.     Lipstick completes any look. You can wear only mascara, blush, liner and lipstick/lip gloss — and you can look complete!
3.     Always remove eye makeup at night, this will reduce eye puffiness in the morning.

DD: Do you have a “signature look?” What is it?
I would describe it as casual, beachy, and chic. I tend to gravitate towards flowing tops, but I will pair them with structured jackets or pants. Most of my clothes are earth tones with a splash of color, in comfortable fabrics – cotton blends or rayon. My jewelry of choice always incorporates a natural-looking stone (real or fake). Comfort is always key for me, but I always try to look polished by pulling it together with jewelry, belts, and cuts that flatter my shape.
Chrissy also has great tips for keeping cool and crisp by choosing the right fabrics for the heat:
·        Chrissy suggests denim with a high cotton content, and a small synthetic content. A jean with either a 98 percent cotton/two percent lycra, or 96 percent cotton/four percent Lycra fabric, is a good combination. Joe’s Jeans, Seven For all Mankind, Citizen, and Gap are all great for this content!
·        Cotton tees and tanks are favored in the summertime because it is so breathable. Look for Pima and Supima Cotton – they are the softest cottons.
·        For dressier occasions, ditch the polyester blends and look for 100 percent silk, which is more breathable and cool! Another option could be a chiffon (which is made from either silk or nylon), which is also breathable and light. Look for a lining in an acetate or nylon blend.
