Darlings, I am still in shock from the attack on the Boston Marathon. This week the violence once again hit home. And for in my case it very close to home. I grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. The injuries sustained by the runners and the bystanders are horrific. The bombs may be “low-tech,” as the reports say, but their builders know how to inflict massive misery. Sadly, attacks like the one and on other soft targets may be our new “normal” as we learn to live with the same type of fear and uncertainty that has plagued the rest of the world for decades.

The very thought of it leaves me reeling.

Darlings, be kind. Kindness is a greatly underestimated weapon in the fight against darkness.

Gracey HitchcockFixing a small flaw like stretch marks or blemishes isn’t about trying to be perfect or pleasing others. It is about feeling good about you. If fixing a small flaw makes you feel more confident, why hesitate?  Feeling more confident lets you relax and focus on your work and relationships. So darlings, never let anyone make you feel vain or self-conscious about taking care of youself. Remember, feeling beautiful helps to make life sweet.

Gracey HitchcockThere is a great episode in Sex in the City in which all four characters complicate their lives by trying to meet other people’s expectations. At the end of it Carrie asks, “should women stop ‘shoulding’ all over themselves? It is a very good question.

How much time do you waste every week doing things that bore you, or make you fat to please others, or to be one of the gang? Do you conduct your professional life or personal life to meet list expectations that aren’t working for you and maybe never really did?

Darlings, life is too short to live trying to meet a list of “should.” Life is sweeter when you replace “should” with desire, and dreams with goals.

By trying to please everyone you often end up making no one happy. Darlings, I’m not advocating being selfish or self-centered. But when it comes to your life, know this: if you don’t take charge and make choices that are right for you, no one else will.

To get the most out life sometimes you need to rock the boat and break some rules. Katharine Hepburn said, “If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun.”

So this week, before you take another vitamin, go on a diet, or make any other big or small lifestyle change, do your own research and make the best decision for you. Don’t follow other people’s rulebook, write your own.

Gracey HitchcockWhen I interviewed Jackie Collins recently, I asked her if she preferred to stay in or go out on Valentine’s Day. She didn’t hesitate before she said, “stay in”. She told me that she prefers a well-cooked meal and being cozy. She also pointed out that Valentine’s Day is the worst in normally-fabulous restaurants – as you are packed in and hurried out. I agree! So darlings, cook or cater a meal with a loved one or for friends. Get cozy, romantic, and sexy!

The fabulous Jackie Collins!Don’t miss my upcoming interview with Jackie Collins about her new book. Both are fabulous!

Happy Valentine’s Day darlings!

Darlings, I know that not everyone loves Valentine’s Day. Some dismiss it was commercial and corny. It may well be, as bestselling author Jackie Collins recently told me, the worst night of the year to dine out.  And for many who have not yet found love it may seem cruel.
But darlings, I am romantic. I cannot resist a celebration of love. So, if it appeals to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your lover or friends. Celebrate love in all its forms sweetly, softly, jovially, hotly or all of the above.

Darlings, I want tell you about something I am very excited about.   Next week, I am launching my own online store, Luxury of Pearls as well as a Facebook social store.

I have been thinking about doing this for a while. I finally decided to go ahead because I love pearls. Everywhere I go, women want to know where I bought my pearls and how they can buy some too. I thought it would be fun to make that happen. I will let you know when it is live next week!

Gracey HitchcockDarlings , learning to do your own nails or blow dry your own hair can give you a wonderful sense of freedom. You can pare your routine down or bump it up as the occasion demands. It lets you travel without worrying if you can find a salon to do your hair or nails. Sure, the other option is not to care and go au naturel, but having skills lets you choose between dull old undone and really done. You can do just enough to be fabulous all the time, and that, my darlings, is freedom.

Darlings, I remember a magazine story I read as teenager, it was about the beauty products used by celebrities. They actually gave the brand names, shades and preferences. It was exciting because it was rare for stars to discuss personal grooming in that type of detail then, unless they were endorsing it. The writer pointed out that it wasn’t as if there was a secret store where stars shopped. After all, what the stars use to look good is available to all of us. So darlings, go ahead and glam it up. Try out a fancy manicure a la Adele, or a new hairstyle like Kate’s or Clair’s.  Glamour is good for the soul and wonderful for the morale.

Darlings why not make this” the year of yes.” Refuse to give up on yourself.  Forget resolutions and dreams. Focus on your goals and aspirations. Get down and dirty with a plan that will move you forward. Make this the year of yes!
On another note, please get a flu shot, if you haven't already. I have gotten one most years since I was seven. Flu shots do not make you sick. If you get sick after the flu shot, darling you were infected before you got the shot. The flu is deadly this year. Deadly! And there months of flu ahead of us. If you don't care about yourself and missing 2 weeks or more of your life. Get the shot or you may infect a baby or elderly person who might die. If you are allergic to eggs or have other issues call your doctor or a clinic. I care. That is why am writing this. Be well. Be happy.
