How many shoes have you ruined from driving? You know how the back of the heel gets scuffed and dirty from resting on the floor of a car - even with carpets. Shoe Angels are reusable heel protectors for your good shoes. They come in two shapes to fit any type of heels. You just press them on and drive. Then peel them of when you get where you are going. Tests have shown the adhesive won’t damage even your finest shoes. The product was developed by two women who experimented with their own shoes!

The peel-off protectors fit into a cute metal business card style case. Prices range from $7.95 to $20.

Whisper thin washable cami for under anything that needs to be dry cleaned or that might itchHave you heard of autrepeau? It’s a line of whisper-thin undergarments designed to prevent chaffing and itching, and also to save on dry cleaning costs by acting as a barrier between you and your delicate dry clean-only business wear.

I have owned a tee-shirt from autrepeau for years, as just looking at wool - or even cashmere - can make me break out in hives on a bad day. I stick to a cashmere silk blends or cotton, and even then I have been known to itch. It’s my fair skin. Some women are bothered by perspiration and use them to protect their clothes or cut down on chaffing in this icky, sticky weather we have been having. Whatever your issue, they are must for the well-dressed fashionista.

Woman's chapan robe, ca. 1860–1870 Uzbekistan, Bukhara Silk; warp-faced plain weave, warp-resist dyeing (ikat)Fashionistas won’t want to miss The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s (FAMSF) exhibit To Dye For: A World Saturated in Color. It investigates one of fashion’s hottest trends by exploring its history of fabric dying, which has been honed for centuries by cultures spanning the globe. From pre-historic to modern times, the unique art of tie-dye is resurging.

The exhibition opens July 31 in the Lonna and Marshall Wais Gallery and Diana Dollar Knowles and Gorham B. Knowles Gallery for Textile Arts. To Dye For runs through January 9, 2011. It will feature more than 50 textiles and costumes that include a diverse array of “resist-dye” examples. They come from the comprehensive collection of textiles from Africa, Asia, and the Americas at FAMSF, as well as several Bay Area private collections.

The “resist-dye method” is an inclusive term describing the process of dyeing textiles to form patterns by preventing dye from reaching specific areas of the cloth. Tie-dye is just one example of it. Methods of resist-dyeing also include stitch-resist, batik or wax-resist dyeing, stencil-resist, mordant-resist, and ikat (warp- or weft-resist dyeing). FAMSF textile curator Jill D’Alessandro explains, “To Dye For not only highlights the museum’s impressive permanent collection of textiles, but also shows how cultures across the world have used similar techniques for centuries - with results that are sometimes similar, and at other times startlingly different. The end result will be a stunning array of textures, patterns and color.”

The museum describes the exhibit as “a truly cross-cultural presentation”. This exhibition showcases objects from a variety of cultures and historical periods, including a tie-dyed tunic from the Wari-Nasca culture of pre-Hispanic Peru (A.D. 500–900), a paste-resist Mongolian felt rug from the 15th to 17th centuries, and a group of stitch-resist dyed 20th-century kerchiefs from the Dida people of the Ivory Coast. These historical pieces are contrasted with artworks from such contemporary Bay Area artists as Judith Content, Ana Lisa Hedstrom, Angelina DeAntonis, and Yoshiko Wada.

Included in the exhibition is an elegant tie-dye evening gown from Rodarte’s 2009 collection, and an ikat trench coat from Oscar de La Renta’s 2005 collection. Both looks foreshadowed the current spring/summer trend of tribal-infused fashions such as Dries Van Noten’s and Gucci’s ikats and Proenza Schouler’s and Calvin Klein’s tie-dyes.”

Entourage star Perrey Reeves recently wore K. Brunini’s Body Armor cuffs to the premiere of the show’s seventh seasonBold bracelets have been a recurrent theme on the catwalks for the past few seasons. Big bold cuffs have never been more fashion-forward. Entourage star Perrey Reeves recently wore K. Brunini’s Body Armor cuffs to the premiere of the show’s seventh season in Los Angeles. The look is bold and inspirational – a true signature style in the making. The custom-made cuffs are sterling silver, fire blasted one-of-a-kind, and $10,000 each. The Body Armor collection from Katey Brunini is the final chapter in her Shapes of Strength series.

Tone a trend tone make it your own, Marc by Marc JacobsSummer is the perfect time to try on a trend or two. Lightweight cottons and linens are less expensive than the wools and knits we wear the rest of the year. Retailers begin their summer sales by July, so you can pick up a fabulous bargain and still have weeks of wear.

Warm weather is the time to indulge in your romantic side. Romance doesn’t have to mean lace and ruffles. But if that appeals to you, pin a flower in your hair and go retro. Designers Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, and Chanel all did takes on retro looks. Chanel showed fabulously romantic 1920s-style flapper-inspired looks with sooty eyes and bobbed hair. Diane Von Furstenberg did flirty little dresses that also have a 20s feel. Marc Jacobs showed 1950s-style full skirts and bustiers; think sexy housewife a la June Cleaver and Mad Men.

Not everyone is so dramatic in their approach. For the office or for those with tamer taste, the classics have never looked fresher. Marine stripes and whites are everywhere from the catwalks to the Gap this season. Slip a boldly-striped tee-shirt under a linen suit for a fresh look. In a more casual work place, or for the weekend, pair a striped top with white pants or a white shirt. Team this look with a sharp nautical-looking pair of espadrilles. Another cute and flirty look is a knit dress in marine stripes Keep your shoes casual; try a flat gladiator sandal or a mid-height espadrille with a short knit dress like this.

Floral bangles Floral prints have never been fresher, and you can wear them everywhere. Mixing patterns this season shows a sophisticated fashion sense. Dress up a favourite suit with a gorgeous floral scarf. Then add this season’s hottest accessory, an oversized floral bangle. Complete the outfit with a neutral or coloured shoe. If you have been tortured by the popular skyscraping heels of the past few seasons, now is the perfect time to buy one of the new lower-heeled shoes. Get a feminine silhouette when choosing a lower heel to avoid looking dumpy.

"Glass" slipper by PradaKeep flip-flops for the weekend or your commute, no matter how casual your office is. Be sure to store your flip-flops in a neat zip-lock bag before stashing them in your tote for commuting. This keeps nasty street bacteria from contaminating your bag’s contents. The soles of your shoes harbor E. coli and other nasty stuff.

Long bohemian beach dresses and shiny minis are opposite, but fun trends. The long bohemians can be found at all prices. I have seen cute ones at Tommy Bahama and Old Navy. They are fun for parties and look good on almost anyone. Stick a flower in your hair and strap on a gold sandal, and you’ll be fabulous at any BBQ or beach-side do. If the mercury climbs, you can even take this look to dinner in the city.

Short and shiny is hot, Pronzer Shouler Short minis are the rage. If your under 30 and have the legs - go for it! Shiny minis rule at night. I adore short sequined tank dresses and shiny little-nothing mini skirts. What a fun look when you are young and pretty. If you are older go for a longer - a few inches above the knee - shiny shift of satin or sequins.

Short shorts are hot too. Designers such as Cynthia Rowley, Marc Jacobs and Gucci sent them down runways for day and evening. Remember, when you show your legs you need to cover up on top. Try a simple tee-shirt or tank.

Cool jumpsuits are in now. They can be flattering to many body types.

Many designers also featured a range of “tribal prints,” from African mud cloth to southeast Asian Ikat patterns. These prints are often paired with safari jackets or the new abbreviated trench coats. The watchwords this season are mix and match.

Who loves short short shorts?Belts of all types are used to highlight the waist and hips. Cat’s eye sunglasses as well as oversized white frames a la Jackie O are fun. If you want the fresh look for a summer shoe and bag, look for a new one in straw or raffia. I loved the straw bags from Prada trimmed with crystals; it was so fresh and whimsical. My advice is never to overspend on straw. I have bought super-pricy straw and raffia bags and they never last too long. Get a pretty one at good price - enjoy it and toss it.

Don’t forget hair and make-up can be the easiest way to update your look. Bronzer is all the rage, but use a light hand. Pick one suited for your skin tone and use it where the light hits your face naturally. Keep your make-up sheer and pretty.

Eye liner has never been more important. Try wearing it even if you never have. It opens the eye. If you don’t like black, try a colour or use soft grey or brown. Get a few different liners; you can an inexpensive drug store brand. Try a new smudge pencil, we have reviewed many. For super-humid days, I like a cake liner applied with a thin brush. It never moves. If liner rely baffles you, go to a good department store and get tips from a pro. Off hours and week nights are good times to make an appointment. You will be glad you did.

Don’t forget your lips. Lip colour can be playful, bold, sexy, or nude this season. I think the glossy pinks and trendy corals are flattering on everyone and work from day to night. Get a shade that suits you, and add a sparkly gloss for the evening. Bold red is another choice, but keep the colour sheer. There is a red to suit any skin tone, but the trendiest are deep and sanguine. Nudes are very hot now, but hard to wear. Be sure the one you pick does not wash you out. I saw a stunning 35ish celebrity on a talk show recently sporting the “nude look”. It aged her and made her face look puffy with no definition. Not fabulous.

Pattern your nails with Chic PrintsConsider trying a new bold nail color; opt for a trendy greige, deep blue, red, or candy colour pink or turquoise. If you have a conservative work place, keep the wild stuff on your toes! If you want to try a trendy Minx mani, but did not want to shell out for one, look for OPI’s new Chic Prints at Sephora. You can buy a set of 16 printed patches for $15 U.S. to apply to your nails at home. They last about two days, but a pricy Minx mani lasts only about five days, or so the bogs tell me. I do not get Minx manis. Some ladies say, if you are handy, you can do your hands and feet with one set and make it last three days. It’s definitely a special occasion item. I used to get a palm tree painted on one big toe with a “diamond”. It lasted 10 days. I am thinking of doing it again. Many corner nails shops will paint designs on your nails with metallics for a reasonable price that will last a bit longer.

Darlings, summer is hot and fabulous and that is exactly how you should look. So pick your trend, try it on, and wow the world.

Signature Green Label Skirt in fresh floralI just received these fabulous pictures from designer and model Karen Green. They are from the new spring line for her Green Label Designs. I met Karen last year when she débuted her collection at Tulipano Boutique here in Atlanta. I was impressed with her energy, creativity, and drive. In the last year she has come a long way. She has expanded the line from her one very original skirt to include a dress, romper, and boxer shorts. Green Label Designs are now available at some of the chicest boutiques in the southeast, Boston, and counting. I know she has plans to take the line The "Martini" romperto Canada, too. This line has a piece you’ll want this spring. www.greenlabeldesigns.com

Lingerie bags let you wash delicates in the machine without damageBetween the economy and the price of clothing, the thought of ruining anything in the wash could make you cry. And the cost of dry cleaning can drive you crazy. I have always washed my husband’s cashmere sweaters and my silk ones successfully. I even use a sweater bag and pop them in the washer on delicate with special detergent. I dry them flat and press lightly. They look perfect and smell fabulous. Recently, a dear friend and DolceDolce reader tried it. She was thrilled. Her cashmere sweater washed perfectly — and she saved $13!

To get the real lowdown on wardrobe preservation we went to Heidi Fuentes, a fabric care scientist at Reckitt Benckiser, the makers of Woolite products.

DD:Cashmere is fabulous, but the cost per wear can be high, if dry cleaning is used every one or two outings. Is it better to dry clean or wash cashmere sweaters?
HF:  If the garment label strictly says “Dry Clean Only,” I advise to follow the label. There are various reasons why the garment may be considered “Dry Clean Only” such as colorfastness or the potential to shrink.  Washable cashmere can be laundered in Woolite For All Fabrics, a detergent that won’t cause shape loss and keeps fibers strong.

DD: Silk jerseys are so popular now. Many designers use them in dresses that are worn frequently to work and elsewhere. What is the best way to care for them?
HF: Items like silk jerseys are so popular because they are so versatile. Of course that means more wear and more washes. Take a look at the care label first. Washable fabrics can be laundered using Woolite For All Fabrics. Wash the item in the coldest temperature and on a gentle cycle. You may also want to wash the garment separately from items with hooks and zippers to prevent possible snags.

DD: What best way to clean the inside of a good handbag lined with fabric, felt, or leather?
HF: Removable lining, like fabric and leather, can generally be washed in Woolite For All Fabrics. You should be a little more careful with washing felt as its quality may vary and shrinking may occur.

DolceDolce Tip: I clean my non-removable hand-bag linings each week with a gentle diaper wipe or damp wash cloth and gentle bath soap to remove grime and small stains. It keeps my expensive bags pristine. I also wipe down the outside of the bag and then polish with a clean dry cloth.

DD: How can you keep pricey cotton T-shirts looking pristine?
HF:  Cotton t-shirts are such a staple item, I’m so happy you asked this question. Keeping those colors vivid is the most important part of keeping high-end T-shirts looking their best. Wash on a cold temperature using Woolite For All Colors.

DD: Sweaters and T-shirts have a brand-new pressed look when they come from the dry cleaners. Can that be duplicated at home, and if so how?
HF: People often forget about timing after they throw their clothes into the dryer. Try to grab the items just as the cycle is ending so they are still quite warm. Wrinkles form when the clothes cool down in their crumpled state. Hanging your T-shirts immediately after the cycle ends will create that crisp look. The same goes for sweaters, but make sure they are 100 percent dry before hanging. Hanging while still damp will stretch the fabric. Of course, you can always pick up a hand-held steamer with a press attachment. This little tip is mentioned a few times in the virtual look book on www.findthelookkeepthelook.com.

DD: Is there a secret to keeping designer jeans looking as fabulous as their price tag?  HF: Ingredients like bleach, phosphates, and enzymes can be harsh on your jeans, causing them to fade over time. Turn your jeans inside out to help protect against fading.  Always wash in cold water and with a color-safe detergent like Woolite For All Darks, which does not contain any of the previously mentioned harsh ingredients.

Bra bags are good for all types of small fine washablesDD: Is there safe way to machine-wash good lingerie?
HF: To save your bras and money, they should washed in specifically designed Woolite bra bags. Wash other nice lingerie on the gentle cycle, in cold water, with Woolite For All Delicates.

DolceDolce Tip: I swear by lingerie bags for all delicate laundering. You can wash hose, sweaters, bathing suits and all types of delicates this way. Love this idea!

DD: Almost everything you buy, except for most underwear, says “Dry-Clean Only”. How can you tell what is safe to wash?
HF: As I mentioned earlier, garments that are labeled as “Dry Clean Only” are usually marked that way for a reason. That being said, they could potentially be washed using Woolite For All Fabrics, but test an inconspicuous area of the garment first for colorfastness. Woolite also makes Woolite Dry Cleaner’s Secret Dry Cleaning Cloths that can be used for “Dry-Clean Only” clothes that need a quick refresher.

DD: What can you do about rings on the collar on white cotton, or underarm staining?
HF: Pre-treating is a simple step that so few remember to take.  Underarm staining is difficult to remove because the stain is caused by a chemical reaction. Washing as soon as possible gives your shirts a fighting chance of staying stain-free. The longer you wait to wash the garment, the more time the stain has to set into the fabric.

DD: Is there a secret to making cotton dresses really crisp in the summer?
HF:  A quick mist of spray starch can help achieve that crisp look.

DD: Many vintage clothes from the 1960’s and 1980’s are synthetic and can have slight odor when you buy them, or pick up odors when wear them. What is the best way to clean them?
HF: Avoid over-washing because that can weaken the fabric of vintage clothes.  When you do launder these garments, make sure you use a detergent that is formulated to care for all types of fabrics, such as Woolite For All Fabrics. If your clothes are practically odor-catchers, store them with potpourri packets to give them a light, sweet scent.

DolceDolce Tip: Spray sheets of stationary with your favourite scent and use them instead of potpourri to scent drawers and clothes. Lingerie drawers are the place to store your scented soap.

Sandra Bullock's stunning look; Copies of Oscar dresses will be coming soon No true fashionista would willingly miss the Oscars. If you pay attention, it is great place to learn how to turn out for a special occasion. The average couple may have a smaller glad-rag budget than the Hollywood crowd, but the rules and inspirations are the same. Some of the dresses, shoes, and extras are more affordable than one would imagine. And some of the same designers the stars wear have fabulous bridge lines.

Forget the excuse that celebrities are young and thin. The past few years Hollywood’s Oscar-going elite has included stunners of a certain age as well as ladies with generous curves.

So darlings, be inspired by your favourites, learn from the faux pas of those who failed, and get ready to shine at your next gala.

1: Evening is the time to flaunt a stunning décolleté, but keep it under control. Too much of a good thing makes people nervous and can make you look cheap. It can also just be unflattering. Hilary Swank showed up at the Vanity Fair Oscar party this year in a dress cut to her navel that revealed a boney frame. It was not attractive. It’s interesting to note that few stars this year wore deeply-cut gowns. Most chose more discreet décolletés. I noticed many chose chic and slimming strapless gowns.

Queen Latifah a fashionista for all 2. Properly-fitted strapless gowns are flattering on most women. They work on busty women as well as the less-endowed. Queen Latifah, who always looks sensational, wore what was essentially a fitted strapless bodice with one thick ornament-jeweled strap. The key to successfully wearing a strapless gown is investing in one with a good built-in corset that’s molded to your body. The gown then does not slip or slide; it hangs elegantly and securely from the corset. If your bosom is a bit less than perfect, you may need a good bra — most women do. But, the bra doesn’t hold up or enhance the gown; it enhances your bosom. You may have seen or heard of stylists using double-sided tape to secure low-cut or tricky necklines. It is a neat trick, such as the one Hillary Swank wore, but it will not hold up a strapless gown. Get your dress fitted. I have several fabulous strapless gowns. They do not budge and I can dance till dawn.

3. Leave the thigh-high skirts to the Rockettes. Mariah Carey looked so cute, but her trendy blue gown was anything but chic with its overly revealing neckline and thigh-high slit. Thigh slits with plunging décolletés belong on the stage. It screamed Vegas.

Petite women often feel overwhelmed in floor-length gowns. They make the mistake of thinking a slit or dress that hikes up in front, similar to the one Carey Mulligan wore this year, will help them look taller. It is just the opposite. Occasionally, a long-sleeved black velvet number with a discreet slit to the knee works for an older lady. But take it from a petite fashionista like me, if you want too look slim and chic (we will never look tall), stick to a simple slim column of a dress. Actually, I have full-skirted ball gowns, scaled to my frame and they are fabulous.

4. Make sure your shoes flatter you legs and your dress. Carey Mulligan is adorable. But the graduated hemline of her black Prada dress and the heavy ankle strap shoes she wore with it cut the line of her slim legs. While the height of fashion, it was far from the most flattering choice. The shoes also caused her to teeter.

Her shoes were fashionable, but so are slightly more delicate shoes that would have looked more elegant. Even though her dress was black, a jeweled shoe would have been prettier and more flattering. For those of us on less lavish budgets, jeweled shoes can be used for years, as they are timeless when well chosen and go with most dresses.

At the opposite end of the fashion spectrum, it was reported that some celebrities wore flimsy flats beneath their Oscar dresses. In my book this is only marginally better than going barefoot or wearing flip-flops. Ladies, buy some shoes! Get your self a cute pair of low-heeled dress shoes and keep them on your feet. Barefooted (or slipper-footed) ladies waddle in gowns. It is not pretty. There are many brands of good-looking comfy, low-heeled dress shoes.

Helen Miirren at 62 sexy and chic 5. Ladies of a certain age can really sizzle. Take a good look at Helen Mirren. The lady is sexy, chic, and 62 years old. I adore Meryl Streep, who is 60. With her face and body, she could go from looking as good as she did this year to looking absolutely fabulous. Demi Moore at 40 is simply stunning. She looks impeccable. She never tries too hard. Among the younger stars, Anne Hathaway always looks fabulous.

6. Start with glowing skin and polished hair. Penelope Cruz, Helen Mirren, and Demi Moore all wore their hair up in soft, polished styles. Kate Winslet and Sandra Bullock both wore their hair down. None of these stylish women looked over-styled or messy. They all hit perfect notes with classic, sexy hair and make-up.

With a bit of work anyone can look like a star. Choose a skin care line that suits your budget and skin type, and stick to it. Schedule any special beauty treatments a week or two before your event. Things like Botox should be discussed at least two or three months before an event.

Test drive you hair and make-up at least twice before an important event if you are doing it yourself, once if a professional is doing it. Do not skip this step. Do your housework or run errands and see if it all stays put.

7. The Oscars is one of the best places to see the latest trends. Notice, the prettiest looks are understated and fresh-faced. Print-out pictures of the stars whose looks you think might suit you. Professional hairstylists and make artists love pictures to help explain what you are looking for. They are visual people. They know you don’t expect to be a duplicate. Then head to your favourite cosmetic counter. Choose a posh line, such as Chanel or Laura Mercier. These are the lines the pros use. They will have trained make-up artists to help you "get the look".

Many of the Oscar dresses will be copied after the show. There will be gowns at all price points. You can have the same look as the stars. Get online and locate your treasures, if you will soon be in the spotlight.

8. Full-figured women of any age can look to Queen Latifah for fashion cues. She always looks chic. Her choices are timeless and flattering. She chooses silhouettes that flatter and elongate her body. I am not suggesting that all curvy women must dress like Queen Latifah, but she really has gotten it right. She demonstrates women do not have to be a size 2 to be chic.

9. Try on your whole outfit at least a week before you debut it. This includes an old favourite you have not worn in a year or more. Most stars on the red carpet look pristine. That’s because top stylists have fined-tune the fit of their shoes and straps. They check zippers and clasps. They make sure it all works smoothly and nothing itches or pinches. I hate pain and annoyance; I test all my clothes for the itchy-pinchies.

A week before the big party is the time to fix a loose shoe or a tricky neckline. Badly-fitting shoes can cause painful blisters, and a sliding neckline can make you fidget. I have a selection of pads to keep shoes from sliding and biting they are from www.footpetals.com. I keep double-stick fashion tape from www.barenecessities.com.  I also have a trusty a sewing kit.

My other supplies include hair pins and L’Oreal Elnett Hair Spray which is brushable.I also have White Sands Liquid Texture Spray in Medium which get shiner the more you heat use and Redken Real Control Mineral Elixir for spritz of weightless shine. I also keep dryer sheets to foil static cling. They work on hair and clothes. A good lint brush is essential. Other friends keep breast pads or silicone “chicken cutlets” in different sizes, Spanx, and a tailor on standby. I hate Spanx. I prefer plain control-top hose or a pair of microfiober control-top panties.

10. Darlings, treat yourself like star. Pamper yourself; you can afford it. Do it yourself if you have to. Remember, even women with all the resources in the world sometimes don’t look fabulous. But with a little effort, anyone can look like a star.

Now go light up the heavens.
