Fall’s new sexy florals

Click the topmost title to open    Scent of a Dream

After years of little girl, fruity-florals this fall there is return to lush, sexy scents.

These new florals are softer and sultrier than you might think when you

“Floral”.  I am not implying there is no room for a crisp, citrus scent

– There is and always will be. There nothing better in the heat, the morning

, or by the sea. But, the scent of a woman is something else entirely.

Charlotte Tilbury’s first fragrance, Scent of a Dream,

Is as lush and sexy as one would expect from the creator

Of the posh makeup line that sells looks called

The Golden Goddess and the Glamour Muse.

“Charlotte’s Scent of a Dream has what has I call a ground-breaking balance

To it, and it is an entirely new perfume group of both Floral & Chypre”, is how Francois Robert,

the fourth generation nose who has created perfumes for Hermes,

Lanvin, Missoni, and Les Perfumes de Rosine, described the result of his collaboration with Tilbury.

Charlotte calls it her fleurotic frequency. It has the fresh lightness

Of a floral and the alluring depth and sexiness of a Chypre,

Without being heavy or dark. This scent smells amazingly unique and people

Fall in love with it! He went on getting specific and effusive,

“Charlotte’s choice of traditional and modern ingredients comes together in a new way.

It is like nothing I have ever smelled before! The Pepper, Frankincense,

and Violet stand out beautifully and beguilingly within the composition of the scent.

I have worked on many scents to procure what Charlotte describes as a distinctive

‘TRAIL,’ and this perfume is one of the first to actually have it. It gilds hallways!”

Charlotte also worked with neuroscientists Dr. Richard Axel and Dr. Linda Buck

to create a scent that works in as elemental a level as human pheromones.

The press release explained that part of the brain responsible for our sense of smell is directly linked to the limbic system in our brain – the seat of emotion and memory.

Charlotte described the effect of her fragrance this way,

“It combines intoxicating floral extracts & musk from scent history with

newly-discovered psycho-active ingredients of the future, creating a universal key to attraction.

I believe that with Scent of a Dream, you can create your own destiny through its psycho-active,

fleurotic frequency. It has the power to attract your future and ignite memories of your past.”

I tried sample vial the day it launched.  The fragrance is seductive and sophisticated –

it lingered elegantly on my skin.  I didn’t expect like it much but it is enticing.

The essence of the Scent of Dream is captured in a short film with

Charlotte’s friend, super model Kate Moss.  Moss is also the inspiration for The Dreamy Look

makeup collection. It is a shimmering palette based on Kate Moss’s look for the

Scent of Dream film in burnished golds and bronze.

$100 for 50mL (There will be 30mL and 100mL bottle available in October)

Kenzo will launch a new fragrance this month. Kenzo World is KENZO WORLD

the first fragrance from Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the company’s new creative team.

Both of them are from California. They met at the University of California, Berkeley,

and started to work for Kenzo in 2011. For the 2013 fall-winter collection, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon made the eye the iconic motif of the Kenzo World:

“The all-seeing eye is a major imprint of the collection and alludes to the force of

the third eye and to spiritual protection from above,” they explain. This symbol is the inspiration behind the striking bottle designed in collaboration with Patrick Li that holds their beguiling new scent!

The eye symbol now transcends into the universe of fragrance, and you will have a chance to see and smell it at the end of August. Master perfumer, Francis Kurkdjia created the scent working with Lim and Leon.

Vogue.com quoted Leon at their big opening bash in Paris celebrating its creation, “It’s all the notes that we love. It’s a little bit of Parisian floral meets a California kind of freshness and everything in between.” I had to use the quote – I think it captures the scent exactly. This light fragrance, with notes of Peony and Egyptian Jasmine, is light and breezy like California but also has depth and a feminine sophistication.  Kenzo World has a je ne sais quoi that feels very Parisian.

Ambroxan, a synthetic that replaces now outlawed Ambergris, helps to give Kenzo World its soft, subtle, seductive quality.  Ambroxan gives a fragrance, that powdery amber-musk scent that is so sexy in an understated way.  This is how Master Perfumer Francis Kukrdjian describes it:  “Ambroxan gives the flowers the enticing quality that we need to forget them as such. It’s a bit like the sfumato in the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, when you juxtapose power. It acts like a fog, when the mist blurs the contours of things all around, and we only recognize their hazy outline.”

I liked this this fragrance at first sniff but as I wore it I fell in love.  It opens up as it warms on the skin. Kenzo World is very feminine but very modern. I couldn’t help but think it suited Lim and Leon’s Kenzo girl who “inhabits the present, like right now.”

Available in September, find it at Bloomingdales (exclusive) 1.7 ounce $86 and 2.5 ounces $100

Outside the US:  https://www.kenzo.com/en/storelocator

Krigler Mediterranean Peach 15 is made with natural essence of Mediterranean Peach from Provence in Saint Tropez,

This light scent, with hint of peach and earthy blackberry leaves, is easy to wear on sultry summer days.

It costs $245. For 1.7 ounces and $355.  For 3.4 ounces.

New to know:

Iso E Super® is one of the hottest new perfume ingredients around. You can read about its popularity in many of this fashion fall’s magazines. Equally popular is the quietly seductive and mysterious,  Ambroxan, It is synthetic that replaces now outlawed Ambergris and gives scents that powdery amber-musk quality that is so sexy in an understated way. Both of notes are proving very seductive.

They work their magic in Charlotte Tilbury’s Scent of a Dream and KENZO WORLD! According to  www. Fragrantica.com  Iso E Super is decried by its creators International fruit and flowers as, “Smooth, woody, amber with unique aspects giving’ ’velvet’’ like sensation. Used to impart fullness and subtle strength to fragrances. Superb floralizer found in the majority of newer fine fragrances and also useful in soaps. Richer in the desirable gamma isomer than isocyclemone e” –   The effect is really something! People seem mad for both scents – and compliments have come thick and fast. Everyone wants to know – “What is that – it smells so delicious”

Super hydrating sun screen

download (2)Click the topmost title to open

The problem with wearing sunscreen is that it can

Leave your face looking oily or very dry.

Too many of them get greasy, cause break outs or cake up.

That’s why I fell in love with

AMOREPACIFIC Resort Collection Cushion Broad Spectrum SPF 30+ Sunscreen.

This broad spectrum sunscreen makes skin look and feel moist and hydrated.

It is the most luxurious and elegant sun screen I’ve tried.

As the company says, it is “perfect for on the go touch ups”

and if you burn-easily as I do,  you know

how important this can be.

The lovely compact is equipped with a specially designed

anti-microbial puff, enabling hygienic use. These puffs help make application smooth and seem to keep your product very clean.

As with all AMOREPACIFIC products, the sunscreen ingredients of Zinc Oxide, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, and Titanium Dioxide are supplemented with

anti-ageing botanicals.

Plum extract is added to protect against “heat-aging which accelerates oxidation and inflammation

the two major causes of premature aging”.  Purslane extract is added as “superior antioxidant protection, reducing skin irritation from environmental aggressors”. And Bamboo sap is “rich in minerals and amino acids” and it “hydrates for long-lasting suppleness”.  All together this formula leaves skin protected and glowing.

A few reviewers on store sites have complained that this is” just a sunscreen”. It is just a sunscreen – a fabulous, luxurious, effective, sun screen.

I see why Olympians like Swimmer Natalie Coughlin and Soccer Player Hope Solo love the AMOREPACIFIC range of Cushion Compacts.  They know the importance of waterproof and sweat proof sun protection.

Beauty bargain: Fuller Thicker Hair!

FTHjpg (1)Click the topmost title to open

Stress, diet, over-processing, genetics, and even serious health problems can all make your hair thin or even fall out. Some women experience sudden and temporary hair shedding after pregnancy or going off the pill. Menopause or even perimenopause can cause hair to get thinner, even in women who are in their mid-thirties.

So if your hair is looking dull and thin you might want to try the new Thicker Fuller Hair line of products from Schwarzkopf. There is a Revitalizing Shampoo, Moisturizing Shampoo Weightless Conditioner, and Instantly Thicker Hair Serum, Thicker Fuller Hair Cell-U-Plex Root Lift & Bodifying Spray for Fine, Thin Limp Hair as well as Thicker Fuller Hair Weightless Volumizing Hair Spray and Thicker Fuller Hair Weightless Volumizing Hair Spray.  Since I first reviewed this line two new products have been added: Thinning Hair Treatment and Instantly Thick Serum.  The Thicker Fuller Thinning Hair Treatment is foam you use every day as an intense treatment for 3 months.  The Thicker Fuller Instantly Thick Serum helps to strength hair, stimulate growth and reinforces hair strands for a thicker, fuller look.

The products are priced from $3.99 to $6.99, making this one of the best values we have seen.

The products all contain Cell-U-Plex, a blend of botanicals, wheat proteins, and caffeine, designed to work together to help prevent hair loss and prevent breakage. These ingredients are similar to those in some of the most expensive hair care lines designed to address the problem of thinning hair. Wheat proteins help to strength hair instantly and prevent hair loss from breakage. It also makes hair look instantly thicker by wrapping around the individual strands. Fuller Thicker hair care also contains a special Marine Flora Complex described as “Tahitian marine water microalgae, derived from sustainable, renewable sources that strengthens and thickens hair, helping to prevent thinning hair”.  According to the company, “It’s clinically shown to help reduce the appearance of hair loss by targeting the three stages of your hair growth cycle.”

Caffeine is a key ingredient in Cell-U-Plex – and perhaps the most important one.

There are several recent studies that show that caffeine applied topically does help stimulate hair follicles.

I have thick, fine hair. I am always looking for ways to strengthen it and prevent damage from colour and heat styling.  These products smell and feel luxurious.  With products priced well under $20 each, Thicker Fuller Hair by Schwarzkopf is a true beauty bargain.  You can find it online, at drugstores and big box stores, as well as online.

Doctor approved infused-water recipes

If you resist buying infused-bottle water to avoid the environmental

impact and expense there is no reason you need to miss out on the benefits

We have recipes from top experts that we think taste better and fresher – You may agree. And there is no worry about what is in them because you control the quality!

And when water tastes this good – you drink more of it. I know I do!

DolceDolce note:

I used my Citrus Zinger Infusion Set sample to make the citrus and cucumber recipes. It made it so easy and very pretty too. The cucumber slicer connects to the 28oz BPA/EA-free bottle so it is easy to cut a ribbon of fresh cucumber right into the water. My set also includes the Citrus Zinger harnesses the power of fresh fruits by preserving their taste, aroma, hue, vitamins and minerals.

Here are the recipes:

All set work and hydrate!

All set work and hydrate!

 Mango Ginger

This combo might seem weird, but adding the health benefits of ginger and the antioxidant power of mangoes is a surprisingly tasty mix! “Mangoes contain so many vitamins that help boost your immune system. It has antioxidants that maintain youthful glowing skin and aid in the production of blood cells,” says Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. a NYC anti-aging expert and long-time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team.  “Ginger is also helpful in fighting infection, has been linked to lower cholesterol levels, may reduce muscle aches, and helps digestion,” adds Dr. Calapai.

Grapefruit Rosemary

Recently rosemary was found to be the main ingredient eaten by residents of an Italian village with one of the highest populations of people who live past 100! “Rosemary improves circulation and sends more blood to the brain which is linked to greater concentration and potentially reduces risk of Alzheimer’s,” says Dr. Calapai. Grapefruit is not only delicious but it’s a natural fat burner, boosts metabolism and cleanses your liver.

Melon Mix

Cut up watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe chunks and throw into your water over night. “This melon variety tastes great and is amazing for your skin,” says Dr. Kally Papantoniou board certified dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. “Melons are immensely hydrating, meaning more hydration per cup of water. They are also chock-full of antioxidants that keep skin clear plus they contain vitamins that promote collagen production which helps skin cell turnover.”

Citrus Mint Pick your favorite citrus fruits, cut up into slices and add some crushed mint.  “Adding mint to your water is not only extra refreshing but also improves digestive health and can speed up your metabolism,” says Dr. Calapai. “Mint actually contains salicylic acid, a potent acne fighter,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “It’s also well known for its anti-inflammatory properties which work to calm irritation both on your skin or internally,” she adds.

Cucumber Lavender

“The reason so many spas use cucumber based treatments is because it contains many skin friendly minerals like magnesium, potassium and silicon,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “This mix is especially healthy,” says Dr. Calapai “Cucumbers are powerful detoxifiers, flushing out any waste in your system. Adding crushed lavender to the mix not only adds a beautiful aroma but can also help digestion as lavender contains polyphenols that reduce bad bacteria in your gut, making your system run smoother,” he explains.

Pineapple Coconut WaterThis one is almost cheating… almost. Get your favorite store bought raw coconut water and refrigerate overnight with large chunks of pineapple. The coconut-pineapple flavor combo is delicious and reminiscent of a piña colada without all the sugar and calories. Although this is not pure H2O, coconut water contains electrolytes which plain water does not, which rehydrate you in record time. “Pineapple is yet another fruit that aids in collagen production,” says Papantoniou “This is not just great for beautiful skin, and collagen also has a major role in bone health and tissue repair.”

Water does not have to be boring, it can be delicious. Drink up and enjoy the many benefits!

Is your sunscreen shady?

sunClick topmost title to open

According to study published in the

Journal of American Academy of Dermatology

(JAMA), and reported widely, 40 percent of

top consumer rated sunscreens sold on

Amazon.com  did not adhere to AAD guidelines,

including not being water and sweat resistant.

Many others are also facing legal challenges,

alleging they are not performing up to their marketing claims.

This doesn’t surprise me! I have found shopping

for good quality Mineral sunscreen to be very challenging.

Now, Dr. Kally Papantoniou tells you what you need to know to really protect your skin. She is a Board Certified New York Dermatologist, so she knows her stuff!

Do you really need SPF 50 or higher?

Dr. K: SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet B (UVB)

rays, which cause sunburns, but not UVA rays, which are more closely linked

to deeper skin damage. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer.”

Dr. Papantoniou explains that, “The SPF rating is a measure of the time

it would take you to sunburn if you were not wearing sunscreen as opposed

to the time it would take with sunscreen.

“SPF is not a consumer-friendly number,” says Dr. Papantoniou.

“It is logical for someone to think that an SPF of 30 is twice as good

as an SPF of 15 and so on. But that is not how it works.”

According to Dr. Papantoniou, “An SPF 15 product blocks

about 94% of UVB rays; an SPF 30 product blocks 97% of UVB rays;

and an SPF 45 product blocks about 98% of rays.

After that, it just gets superfluous,” she says.

Sunscreens with higher SPF ratings block slightly more UVB rays,

but none offers 100% protection. Dr. Papantoniou recommends

her patients use products with an SPF 30 – 50, depending on their skin type and medical history.

How much sunscreen should you use?

Dr. K: You’ve probably heard people say to use an amount the size of a quarter.

Wrong! You’re supposed to use a shot glass full of sunscreen on all exposed

areas. “And here’s something else you probably don’t know,” says Dr. Papantoniou.

“SPF only refers to UVB rays. There is no ratings scale for UVA protection.

So look for the words ‘Broad Spectrum’ on the label and specific ingredients.

The most important ingredients for UVA protection are Avobenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.”

Dr. K says: Wear sunscreens rich in antioxidants

Natural antioxidants are the latest breakthrough in sunscreens

and are a safe way to boost our natural immunity to the sun’s harmful rays.

When layered or combined with a sunscreen, they add an extra level of protection.

Some known antioxidants are green tea polyphenols, vitamin C, raspberry seed oil, astaxanthin, ferulic acid and reishi mushrooms.

Dr. Kally says: You don’t need multiple SPF products every day!

“Only one of the products you use each morning needs to have SPF of 30 or higher,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “SPF is SPF, regardless of whether it’s in your foundation or moisturizer.”

Dr. Kally says: SPF isn’t an equation.

“You can’t use an SPF 15 primer and an SPF 20 foundation and get SPF 30 coverage.

Your sun protection is only as strong as your highest SPF, which in this case would be 20.”

Of course, if you’re dabbing foundation or moisturizer on only small areas of your face,

it’s wise to double up on products that contain SPF to ensure total coverage”.

If you’re wearing foundation, you don’t need sunscreen. A layer of makeup will protect your skin from the sun.

Dr. Kally says: Make up will not act as a barrier for UV rays, even if it has an added SPF.

“Testing has shown that the SPF protection from a makeup product alone is insufficient.

That small amount of SPF is always a nice addition, but not enough to protect your skin,” says Dr. Papantoniou. Always apply sunscreen (or a moisturizer with broad-spectrum sun protection) under your makeup.

If you’re worried about your skin looking greasy, there are plenty of great mattifying options for the face.

Here is a check list:

Always wear a hat and sun protective clothing if you’re going to be out for long periods of time.

Avoid the mid-day sun.

Don’t be tempted to use that tube of sunblock you didn’t quite finish last year. New summer, you need sun screen.

Slather on generous quantities of sunblock at least 30 minutes before you head outdoors: To achieve the SPF level on the label, you need a teaspoon on your face and a shot glass-worth for your body. Don’t forget your ears, your lips, your hairline, and your scalp or part lines.

Reapply every couple of hours, especially if you’ve been swimming or exercising.

Dr. Kally Papantoniou is a Cosmetic Dermatologist, Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology. She specializes in Injectables, Lasers, Body Contouring, Surgical and Medical Dermatology. Dr. Papantoniou is also a clinical instructor at Mount Sinai Health Center in New York City.

DolceDolce favourites:

Here are a few of our own personal favourite sun screens:

Avène High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50 combines serious sun protection with natural-looking makeup coverage in a handy compact. It is perfect for touching up all day. The compact comes in two shades that should work for most skin tones. If you have sensitive skin that reacts to most sun screens, you may find a mineral sun protection less irritating.

I have tried many types of makeup /sun screen combinations and this one remains on the top of my list for appearance and protection.

Avène High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50 is a pure mineral sunscreen with powerful antioxidants. It provides protection against both UVA and UVB (we think of UVA

UVA as “aging-rays” and we call UVB the “burning-rays”). The Avène High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50 also carries the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Active Seal of Recommendation!

Avène Ultra-light Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ (Face) is a 100% mineral sunscreen for the face with broad spectrum SPF 50+ UVA/UVB filters. It also contains anti-oxidants, as well as being very hydrating and water resistant.

I love the Avène line for the same reason many dermatologists recommend it; this line is very gentle, non-irritating and effective.

Amore Pacific Color Control Cushion Compact Broad spectrum SPF50+ is a favourite of beauty editors and with good reason. From the Korean skincare line that has a cult following, this light weight cream really does almost perfect the skin. The anti-oxidant, hydrating formula floats over imperfections and gives the skin radiance while providing UVA/UVB protection. The compact formula is convenient for the woman on the go! I am addicted.

Note: I use an obscene amount of sun screen. I am fair skinned

person  and religious about applying it. I don’t use chemical sunscreen

– even so-called organic sunscreens like Octisalate.

I react to them after a few days and I prefer not to slather chemicals on

my skin day after day. I like to keep it all as natural as possible.

In my own experience, physical sun screens made from minerals protect my skin

better and are less irritating. It is a personal choice.

For inexpensive, all mineral sun screen try looking at those made for babies. But always check the labels.

I find more and more products for children now contain chemicals.

How to save your thinning hair!

smoClick topmost title to open

Hair today takes a beating!

It is no surprise that more women of all ages are reporting hair loss

and thinning hair due to stress, dieting, genetics, illness, surgery

and even hormones can all cause hair loss.

Even common beauty practices such as tight braids,

blow drying, heat styling, and hair colouring can take a heavy toll.

No one likes losing their hair but for a woman it can be devastating.

Here are Do’s and Don’ts from the experts at éprouvage

to help protect your locks! éprouvage is a hair care line

that features a progressive plant cell technology specially

developed to promote scalp health to create the ideal environment

to produce stronger, healthier hair.

Eat the right foods!   Without enough protein your body can’t

replace the hair that you naturally shed every day.

An Iron deficiency can actually contribute to more hair loss than the

regular 50-100 daily strands.

Eating foods with plenty of vitamin C helps in the absorption of iron.

Try to combine iron-rich foods with those that are high in vitamin C

to get the most out of iron. Vitamin C also helps you’re body’s production

of collagen, which in turn strengthens the capillaries which supply your hair shafts?

Treat your hair to a weekly nourishing hair masque.

Pay attention to ingredients in your hair care products

If you are noticing more hair loss than usually, try products that contain Redensyl.

It was originally used in eyelash growth products and it is gentle enough for daily use.

I tried éprouvage over the past few months and I am impressed. I have thick but fine hair. I colour it as well as heat style it, so I try to pamper it as much as possible with the best shampoos, conditioners and treatments I can find.

I used éprouvage Restorative Scalp Serum, which is described as “a potent scalp treatment that features an award winning ingredient, Reydensl that works to target hair at a cellular level”.

According to the company, “Hair goes through 3 phases and Redensyl helps to keep hair in the growing phase longer resulting in fuller, thicker hair and less hair fall.” The serum is also supposed to reduce the appearance of hair fall by up to 17%, promoting the appearance of hair growth by up to 214 percent.

It also reduces some of the primary issues causing thinning hair and hair loss and nourishes the scalp, helping provide an optimal environment for hair growth.

I found the éprouvage gently fortifying shampoo and éprouvage gently fortifying conditioner very soothing. My hair looked great – very full and bouncy. I  applied the éprouvage Restorative Scalp Serum and the replenishing leave-in conditioner. The leave-in conditioner left my hair shiny and soft.  This is a great line if you have hair that needs gentle care.  If you have tried other hair serums and found they left your sticky  you  won’t have that problem with the éprouvage Restorative Scalp Serum.

Finally a few Don’ts:

Don’t consume artificial sweetener aspartame as it has been

cited as a cause of hair thinning and hair loss.

Food additives can also have a negative effect on your hair.

Raw egg whites contain a substance that binds biotin, which prevents its absorption.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology,

taking to many vitamin A-containing supplements or medications

could trigger hair loss.

Be gentle when styling your hair.

Turn down the heat on styling tools to minimize damage to your hair.

Be gentle when brushing.

Comb knots out from the ends up to avoid breakage.

Never brush wet hair. Instead, use a wide tooth comb to gently disentangle.

Also never rub or twist your wet hair. Instead, pat it gently.

DolceDolce tip:

Consider using a special microfiber hair towel or turban to avoid

damaging delicate weak follicles.

I love the AQUIS hair turban. It helps dry frizz-free without damage.

The éprouvage hair care line is priced from $15 to $30.

You can also find it at Ulta
