Gilding a classic

Click on top title to open This spring designers gilded t 123rochjpghe runways. Models shimmered from head to toe in gilded leathers and lighter-than-air Lurex.

One of the most interesting and unusual items that caught my eye was the selection of classic totes updated in silver, gold, copper, and rose gold. Designers have taken beloved and familiar bags and offered them in richly-textured metal for spring. The look is modern, rich, and the perfect way to update your look.

The Rochas Zip Borsa Tote in Khaki is deceptively simple looking at first glance. Its appeal lays the texture of the rich pebbled finish of metallic leather. The bag is simple and rich. It costs $1,500.

Nina Ricci’s gold Marche Tote is a classic structured tailored handbag updated with a burnished metal patina. This bag is large enough for everyday or even a weekend, if you travel light. It will work with jeans and a white shirt or a suit and heels. It is priced at $1,509.

Vince Camuto’s Owen Tote is good sized rectangular bag that comes in a variety of metallic finishes from pastel to black. It has metal corners to help give it a little shape and short drop from the shoulder to hit at 123NR.jpgthe hip. This bag has a cool downtown vibe but in a black, silver, or gold it can go anywhere. Priced at $228, it is an affordable way to try a trend. ( L Nina Ricci R Vince Camuto)123vc

Beat the bloat

_losalt.jpgClick on to title to open Bloating is uncomfortable and unattractive. As warmer weather arrives a swollen midriff can be even more noticeable in bare summer fashions. Bloating is often the result of bad habits. Caroline Klinge from LoSalt®, a leading reduced sodium salt, has tips on how to avoid the bloat. “These are simple recommendations for changes we can make in our daily lives that don’t involve too much hassle, yet will make us feel significantly healthier,” says Klinge.

Know Your Food Allergies  If you can’t figure out the cause of your bloating have your doctor test for food allergies. Food allergies and intolerances can be a common source of bloating, so it’s reassuring to recognize the cause. Be sure to make the trip to the doctor and don’t self-diagnose because cutting out food groups unnecessarily can lead to negative health effects.

Take Your Time Eating t properly chew our food, it leads to air swallowing, which is a cause of bloating. Even better, if you take your time eating, you will actually recognize when you are hungry and then not overeat.

Overconsumption of Salt  According to the American Heart Association, nine out of ten Americans eat too much salt. Sodium consumption leads to the retention of fluids in the body and therefore, bloating. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends daily sodium intake of less than 2,400 mg, but the average America consumes 3,400 milligrams per day.

Instead of cutting out salt completely, try LoSalt, with 66 percent less sodium than regular table, sea, and rock salts, but which tastes just like regular salt. Plus, LoSalt is a great source of potassium, which helps to regulate your fluid balance.

Get Active  The weather has finally become nice – so go enjoy the fresh air and get moving. Physical activity will trigger your sweat glands to release fluids which your body could be retaining. Whether it’s an intense run or a leisurely walk, awaken those sweat glands to stop the bloat.

No Carbs after Dark  Carbs such as bread and pasta can cause your body to retain water. Try to stay away from these food groups in the evening when your day is starting to wind down in order to avoid their bloating effect.

LoSalt, the UK’s leading salt substitute, is now available online and in many major U.S. grocery chains.

There are pricy products that are worth every penny, but there are also real bargains at the drug store. Thai twist on chicken salad

smthaochicsljpgClick on top title to open I think every meal should be a little special, even if it’s just a salad or sandwich. This simple twist on chicken salad will delight anyone who loves Thai food.

Use leftover chicken, either your own or a rotisserie chicken from your favourite shop. The secret is in the mayo which has red Thai curry paste and few other ingredients you add yourself. You can eat it as a salad on lettuce as I prefer, or in a baguette as my husband prefers.

Click for recipe

Prepare and mix in a small bowl:

1½ cups of chopped/shredded cooked chicken

½ small sweet onion, diced

1 small sweet red pepper, diced

Several well-rinsed fresh basil leaves rolled and sliced thinly or cut into chiffonade.

Optional: 1 Tbsp. almonds or cashews

½ peeled and chopped mango, apple, or grapes cut in half

Mix together:

2 tbsp. good quality mayo (regular, reduced calorie, or 1 Tbsp. mayo and 1Tbsp. low-fat plain yogurt.

2 tsp or 2½ tsp Thai red curry paste

Juice from ½ of a lime (save the other half for garnish)

1 tsp (Thai) fish sauce

Add sauce to chicken, vegetables, and fruit, and toss well.

Serve over lettuce or in a baguette

Garnish with lime and more fresh basil

One competition is one too many

12graceysmallClick on top title to open Recently I opened a press release for a new YouTube channel that encourages you post your last will for family, friends, and posterity. I can’t say this shocked me, after writing about the Kardashians, Paris Hilton, and the antics of other reality stars little of this nature does. But it did disgust me. The money-making scheme –and that is all that this is – is promoting its launch with a contest .To encourage people give them free content they are offering “up to $2,500 in cash prizes for the video that gets the most votes”. The whole idea is revolting and exemplifies exploitation. I do get chuckle thinking about the jokes late night comics will make at their expense and the hundreds of fake “wills” they will sift have to view and will post. I for one would never participate in this tawdry nonsense. I hope it soon is exposed for what it is a crash attempt to exploit a sensitive subject or to attempt to get free content with such paltry prizes. All in all this is one too many contests for me.
