Trends with butter with Katie Jane Hughes

Katie Jane Hughes global colour ambassador for butter LONDON Katie Jane Hughes is one of the hottest runway makeup artists in the business, and is also the global colour ambassador for butter LONDON.  She helped create the line’s new bespoke collection of brightly coloured lip glosses, balms, eye pencils, shadows, mascara, and nail colour.  Katie also heads back-stage teams at butter London, New York, and Paris and works with major designers to create runway looks. All of this makes her the perfect person to talk trends with – plus, she is really a fun lady.
butter London’s new bespoke collection
Katie stroked a shimmering shade of lavender eye shadow across her hand and explained that the whole bespoke colour cosmetics collection is designed to be used without brushes. “We made it easy,” Katie told me, “all you need is your fingers. You can use it anywhere and it is fast, too."
The shimmering, lavender shadow is called Indigo Punk. It is one of six new WINK cream eye shadow shades in the collection that also which includes Inky Stick (the perfect cornflower blue), Union Black, Brown Sugar, Union Jaded (soft grass), Pistol Pink (pink shimmer), Alabaster Gaze (a silver shimmer), and Sun Kissed (a golden shimmer).  All of the shadows, except the highlighter shades Alabaster Glaze and Sun Kissed, have coordinating WINK Eye pencils and WINK Mascaras. There is even a bright Pistol Pink Mascara  in a shocking magenta shade that looks prettier than it sounds. Katie explained that the whole collection is “inspired by shows – we take our inspirations directly from the catwalk and what is happening with collections.” This collection has a real rock and roll edge to it.
Katie showed me how the shadows can be worn as either a pale shimmer of colour, or built up for a sexy, smoky appearance. Katie created a very glam look on Linda, a gorgeous butter London makeup artist, by layering WINK eyeliner in Union Black with lots of Indigo Punk shimmery lavender crème eye shadow. The effect was sexy and sophisticated.
The shadows and liners have a silky feel. They blend effortlessly. Katie explained that the pencils set in 30 seconds and then last for 24 hours.
I have been wearing the Union Black and Indigo Punk Wink Pencils that Katie gave me. They are the best gel liners I have ever tried. They go on easily, blend well, and do not move, flake, or peel – even through sweaty workouts. If your eyeliner runs or smears, this is for you.
The new smoky eye is all about the bottom lashes
Noel and HannahBrightly coloured shadows, like the ones from butter London, are one of the strongest makeup trends this fall. If you are unsure how to wear brightly-coloured eye makeup, Katie suggests   playing up your eye with a  “heavy bottom lash that is all smoked out.” To get the look, take a  WINK eye pencil and WINK mascara in the same colour. Use the liner under your eye. Then, pick out the little bottom lashes with mascara. “It is a new way to do a smoky eye and it looks very cool,” says Katie.
Wear a bright mascara colour under a darker one to accent your eye colour
Katie suggested wearing brightly-coloured mascara as an under-coat for darker mascara. She pointed out that this is a great way to get little glints of colour that highlight the eyes. She suggested I try wearing Union Jaded, a bright lime under Union Black mascara to pick up the gold highlights in my own brown eyes. It looked fabulous and is quite subtle. I also loved the look with Indigo Punk. WINK Mascara is a gel that builds easily and does not clump. It can look very dramatic or very natural, depending on how many coats you use.
Match your eyes to your nails
Another fun runway trend that Katie likes for the fall is matching your eye makeup to your nail lacquer. This is a new take on matching lips and nails. You can be demure in lavenders and lilacs, or bold and brassy in black.
Makeup multitasking for the minimalist
If you are a makeup minimalist and like to get the job done quickly and with just a few products, take a page from Katie’s book. You can use the new CHEEKY Cream Blushes on lips, too.  Katie does. The blushes, like the rest of the makeup, are super blendable and stay on. There are four shades in the collection. You can create a smoky eye with a single WINK eye pencil. Apply it heavily near the lid and let it set, and then blend it out around your eye. Katie likes Inky and I use Indigo Punk.
Lighter lips this fall or…
For the fall, Katie recommends going lighter on your lips and wearing a bright eye. The new Lippy Tinted Balm is gorgeous and super moist, thanks to Shea butter and Vitamin E, which leaves your lips shiny but not slick. The look is pretty and modern. There are four shades: Abby Rose ( Rose), Apricot Sunray (coral), Axis Rose (pretty pink), and Black Cherry (gorgeous wine).
If you feel compelled to wear an outrageously edgy lip look, try Lippy Liquid Lipstick in Union Jack Black. It is a long-wearing, glossy, black, straight from the racier catwalk shows. If you want a trendy red lip, try Lippy liquid lipstick in Come to Bed Red.
There are over a dozen shades of Lippy Gloss in both Sheer and Shimmer. Katie likes to layer  glosses over each other or over Lippy Tinted Balm. One of my favourite looks is Lippy Tinted Balm Abby Rose with Lippy Sheer Gloss in Secret Door. The sheer poppy red of the gloss intensifies the rose lip balm, but it is easier to wear than a real red lip colour – especially in the daytime.
Stylish and good for you too!
The makeup, like the original nail enamel, prides itself on being full of things that are, as Katie put it, “good for you.” All the products are paraben- and phthalate-free. They contain skin-pampering ingredients such as mango seed oil, Vitamin E, and Shea butter. And if you think all this style will break the bank, you will be happy to know that everything is priced from $18 to $20.

Multi-purpose classic

If you are packing for a weekend away at a chic resort consider this one-shoulder kaftan from Kenna + Maxi. A long, dramatic silk kaftan like this can be worn as cover-up for lunch or drinks by the pool, for dinner, or lounging a deux.
Kenna + Maxi kaftans come in fine fabrics and are sized so you don’t end up looking drowned in a sea of fabric as you might with a one-size (never) fits-all kaftan.

Trend alert: Pearls

Pearls are everywhere this fall, from lavish embroidery on couture collections to stunning must-have jeweled cuffs and bags. This sweet but sexy peach cashmere blend dress from Moschino with the pretty pearl details at the neckline is classic, but modern too. Rihanna used pearls to fill the plunging neckline of her sleek sweater dress at Chanel’s fall show earlier this year, for a look that was drop-dead sexy . She proved that pearls are not always demure!

Natural, all-mineral sunscreen

If you have sensitive skin you may want to try chemical-free sunscreen, at least for your face. I use a wide variety of good spray-on sunscreens on my body, but I prefer a pure mineral sunscreen for direct contact with my face. Many top skin care and anti-aging specialists prefer mineral sunscreens, especially on the face. The feel that they are more effective and have fewer side effects.
Coola makes some of nicest natural sunscreens I have tried. These sunscreens are particularly nice if you breakout or have oily skin. They also contain anti-aging ingredients, but won’t irritate your skin or make it greasy.
Coola face SPF 20 Rose Essence Tint is a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen. It has a very faint rose scent and a pale tint. Titanium Dioxide is the main sunscreen ingredient and it is zinc-free. It contains 98 percent natural ingredients, such as organic Acai oil, Omegas-3/6/9, Vitamins B1/2/3 and antioxidant Vitamins C and E. It also has organic sunflower seed to help improve elasticity, as well as organic linseed oil to reduce redness and irritation. It also contains the phyto-protector plankton extract and organic cucumber extract that help to soothe and moisturize.
Coola face Mineral SPF 30 Cucumber Matte Finish is a broad spectrum UVA/UVB, SPF 30 sunscreen with moisturizing Organic Shea Butter and phyto-protector plankton extract. The light cream has a pleasant cucumber scent that disappears almost immediately. The formula contains organic rose hip oil, organic evening primrose as well as flax seed oil and linoleic acid to help improve elasticity and improve the skin’s moisture barrier.
There are no nano particles in any of the Coola sunscreens. A matte unscented version is available. These sunscreens are water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. The price is $36 each.

Scalps are sensitive too

Phillip Kingsley is without doubt one of world's most respected authorities on hair and scalp health. It is safe to say before Phillip Kingsley few people had ever even heard of a trichologist. (Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp.) For 55 years, politicians, royalty, and celebrities have flocked to him when their hair needs help. Now you can access his expertise at home. Phillip Kingsley hair care is available to everyone at home through a range of products he created using his many years of experience.
Phillip Kingsley NoScent NoColour Shampoo and Conditioner are for those with the most sensitive, delicate, or easily-irritated skin. If your skin or scalp is sensitive you many want to try these products. I have tried a selection of Phillip Kingsley products over the years and have found all of them to be excellent and very gentle. The website makes it very easy to select the correct products. Another Brennan Sisters saga from Jane Porter

The Good Wife: A Brennan Sisters Novel by Jane Porter picks up where the Good Sister left off. The Brennan clan is gathered in San Francisco. Aside from grieving for their mother, the-larger-life Irish family is fighting. And with their mother gone, no one is there to sort out their differences.
Eldest daughter Meg and her husband Jeff have not healed a deep rift over Meg’s affair with her boss.  Youngest daughter, Sarah, is once again alone while her husband Boone, a major league ball player is away on a road trip. Sarah still doesn’t trust Boone after his affair. Sarah drinks too much and bickers with her sister Kit. And the lone son of the family, Tommy, and his wife, Cass, are at odds too. Tommy is angry and surly over Cass’s melancholia and preoccupation with her inability to carry a baby to term. Tommy has made peace with their childless state and just wants his wife and marriage back. Cass is hurt and mourning the babies she lost.
In this third book about the Brennan sisters, Jane Porter deals with issues of trust, companionship, and passion as the Brennan sisters put their lives back together after the loss of their mother. She examines the breakdown of trust in a marriage well as what it takes to rebuild a relationship.
Porter once again brings real and compelling characters to life and asks the questions that every modern woman faces. In this book she introduces a new character, Lauren, a single mother who was betrayed by her first lover and who has recently lost her only child. She must learn to love and trust again. Lauren plays a key role in the Brennan saga and is also not unlike many modern women today who are alone and afraid to love. Porter also looks at the many ways people leave a marriage while staying in it. The Good Wife is a page-turner, far above the average family saga.

Sweet almond, apple, and fig tart

This tart has the heady aroma of almonds, the sweet richness of ripe figs, and the sweet-tartness of apples. The nutty marzipan-like filling surrounds the layers of thinly-sliced fruit in a buttery, cookie-like crust.  This recipe is perfect, if you have been looking for something special to do with all the wonderful ripe figs that are available now.
You can make this tart with a frozen prepared pie crust, but our French-style sable crust is so delicious, you should try it. If it breaks as you roll it out, chill it for a bit, or just pat the pieces into the tart shell. It will look and taste perfect when you serve it.
Preheat oven to 400f/230c
1¾ cup/450 grams of soft southern flour (such as White Lily brand) or 1¼ cup (425 grams) of all-purpose flour, and ½ cup (118 grams) of cake/pastry flour.
3 Tbsp sugar
Cut 6 ounces/170 grams of ice-cold butter into pieces, and pulse them into the flour and sugar, until coarse crumbs develop.
Pour in as you pulse 2 to 4 Tbsp of ice cold water with 1tsp salt. The dough should form a ball.
Roll out the dough with small amount of flour. Rolling it on wax paper allows you pick it up and flip it into the pan more easily. Roll from the center out, and do not touch the dough too much.
Place in a 9-inch French tart pan with a removable bottom.
Chill the tart shell while preparing filling
Place in the food processor bowl:
1 cup/273 ml of almonds
½ cup/118 ml of sugar
Pulse until the almonds are ground, but still have some texture
3 ounces/85 grams of softened butter
2 tsp. almond extract
4 eggs
¼ cup/59 ml flour
Pulse until well blended, but do not overmix!
Slice fruit or berries to fill the tart half-full. Use peeled peaches, plums, apples, etc.
¼ cup (59 ml) of any juice that goes with the fruit in your tart and ¾ cup/177 ml sugar. Boil until thick and syrupy.
Fill the tart with the fruit. Arrange it attractively. Pour in the filling. Place the tart in the oven and reduce heat to 350f/180c. Bake for 40 minutes and then remove the tart to glaze. Spread the glaze with a metal spoon evenly over the top of the hot tart.
Be careful, it will be very hot!!! Return to oven for 10 minutes.
