Red carpet trend alert, glamour!

Charlize Theron's look from www.uniquevintage.comIf there is one word to describe the fashion trend set by Hollywood’s 2013 award season it would be “glamour.” From the Golden Globes to the Oscars, the message is that glamour is here is to stay.

Trendsetting looks
Nothing is more glamorous than sequins and beads. Jessica Chastain, Naomi Watts, and Nicole Kidman were just three of the stars to sparkle in elegant shimmering gowns at his year’s Academy Awards.

If you have ever dreamed of dancing in a sparkling gown, this is the year to snap one up. Care for it properly and it will last for years. If you are not ready to commit to a dress, try a glittering manicure or beaded shoes and a bag. Hit shop sales and outlets for a fabulous selection of beaded and sequined dresses online and off.

Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Chastain were a hit with their classic Veronica Lake waves and glam makeup. Stacy Keibler’s glamorous bob and Charlize Theron’s dramatic short do also got the nod from reviewers. Both looks had a decidedly retro feel.

Singer Adele is known for her retro style. Her 1960s Bardot-inspired hair and makeup looked enticing as she sang her Oscar-winning song Skyfall.

This spring let your inner Bardot and Marilyn run wild. But you don’t want to look like you are playing dress up or headed to costume party, so skip the all-over look and instead try adding one of these touches to your look: winged eyeliner, black and white graphic prints, bold mod accessories, sexy, waves, or a short statement cut.

Jennifer Lawrence was a picture in her pastel ball gown from Dior. This princess-perfect gown has young women across the country yearning for more formal occasions. This spring get Jennifer’s look with a classic chignon, soft pastels, romantic full-skirted dresses, and pale nails.

Jennifer Lawrence’sromantic pastel Dior ball gown called for short oval nails painted in CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss Forever Frosted. The colour is a pale lavender frost.

Here is how to get her look from Michael Ashton:
Towel dry wet hair, removing excess moisture before working through the NEW Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray on mid-lengths and ends.

Flip hair over with your head between your knees, blasting hot air down the hair shaft for instant lift at the roots and thickness through the rest of the hair.

When hair is about 80 percent dry, flip your hair back over and take large sections, smoothing them with a medium sized round brush. Pay particular attention to the ends to ensure they are bouncy and luscious.

Section the hair into quarters and apply a medium-large curling iron to each section to achieve a contemporary and feminine texture. Next set in hot rollers. Once cool, carefully brush through hair with a natural bristle brush.

Continue for the remaining three sections, ensuring that as you have finished curling each section you pin it in a barrel curl using a sectioning clip while it cools and sets.

After five to 10 minutes, remove the sectioning clips, gently tousle hair. Pull half of the hair back and tease at the crown, securing pieces together in the back of the head.  Leave down two small sections of hair to frame the face. Mist Luxurious Volume All-Day Hold Hairspray for a long-lasting finish.

“Virtuous “luminous lip gloss

Lip Bliss is a line of luminous lip glosses called What’s your Virtue. They hydrate lips with a blend of natural ingredients including castor, cranberry, safflower seed oils, and peppermint oil. The formula also included anti-oxidants from green tea extracts, and moisturizing Vitamin E. It is paraben- and gluten-free. The glosses are also not tested on animals. They are very pretty lip glosses that stay on with no stickiness. The peppermint oil is a pleasant touch. It is a choice for anyone else looking for an additive-free lip gloss.  The glosses come in five flattering shades as well as clear.

Lip Bliss was started by three teenage girls. One of the girl's mothers of one girl didn’t like the “messaging” on the lip glosses she found in the drugstore.

I like the Lip Bliss glosses, but I do not care for messaging on my cosmetics, however “virtuous.” But, I do like to see young women learn how to make their make a mark in business and marketing. Lip Bliss has certainly done that for these three young women. Make up your own mind about political or moral product messaging.

Easy apple strudel

Elegant but easy to make apple studel is a crowd pleaser!
My husband loves apple strudel. He grew up with both his Hungarian grandmothers making it. When we lived in Montreal we used to frequent fabulous Austrian and Hungarian coffee houses with wonderful coffee and pastries, just like they serve on the Vatsi in Budapest. Thank heavens that was when we were very young and had forgiving metabolisms. We left our last real Hungarian coffee house behind in Toronto when we moved to Atlanta.

So when the Rainier Fruit company sent me some of their delicious new Lady Alice apples, I decided to make strudel. This recipe is so easy, it takes only 15 minutes, including peeling the apples. Try it and you will make the dessert lovers in your life very happy. It is also great for a party.

Lady Alice apples are gorgeous eating and baking apples. They are large, red and gold, and have a sweet, tart flavour. They hold their shape in cooking and are not mealy. I really like them both raw and cooked.

Preheat your oven 350F
Line large baking sheet with parchment
Thaw package of filo dough according to directions
Peel and slice fairly thin 3 cups of tart apples
Toss the apples with 1 cup of sugar (prevents browning)
½ cup walnut pieces (for nut allergies omit and add raisins, if you like)

Right before filling add:
½ cup fine dry bread crumbs
½ cup melted butter

Prepare dough
Melt 1 cup of butter and cool
If your filo sheets are for example, 18 or 20 inches by 12, simply lay out one sheet of filo on a large sheet of wax paper or parchment paper. Cover with butter using a pastry brush. Sprinkle lightly with dry bread crumbs. Top with another sheet of filo and repeat. If the dough tears patch it. But be gentle. You need four layers. If you have smaller sheets of dough, as I did, you will have to overlap them to get larger sheets. Just lay them out and butter them. I used four sheets, but use as many or as few as you need. Filo is forgiving and it all bakes together like magic. I have used many types of filo. If you work quickly, gently, and use plenty of butter, it will all work out.

Lady Alice apples are crunchy sweet and tart. Very good for baking too!Place the apple filling in a line about four inches from the edge of the long side of the dough. Leave three inches on each side empty to fold up before you begin rolling. Use the paper to help roll the dough. Be gentle and flip the roll seam-side down on to parchment line sheet.

Beat an egg well with a fork.
Brush the pastry with a light coating of egg. Remove any loose filo carefully.
Sprinkle with coarse sanding (decorative) sugar.
Refrigerate for one hour before baking
Slash the top in several places with a sharp knife
Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
Cool carefully before wrapping or the pastry will get soggy.

You can make two strudels and freeze one, or make another type of filo pastry such as spinach and cheese. Once the plastic is open the dough must be used or tossed.
