Fall’s fast fabulous fixes

Warm up your hair colour for fall with warmer copper and gold tone like Blake Lively. If you haven’t already fine-tuned your look for fall, now is the time to do it. Being in harmony with seasonal changes helps you look and feel more alive and vibrant.
Fab fall hair
If you colour or highlight your hair, it’s time to warm it up. Trade platinum and wheat tones for gold, honey, and copper highlights. If you are an ash blonde or a cool brunette ask your colourist to make your hair colour a bit more vibrant and intense to stand up to winter’s stronger northern light. Cool winter light can wash out shades that look great in summer’s golden light.
If you want to cut down on hair maintenance and salon expense for fall, ask your colorist to tone your highlights with glaze. Your hair will still have all the dimension of highlights. A glaze is a one-step translucent process that costs about $40. It is often the final step of the highlighting process at a very good salon, as it adds warmth and shine to your hair while improving the texture.
If you wear your hair long, get a trim to get rid of the dead ends. Invest in a good deep conditioner. Use it once or twice a week, especially if you heat style your hair. Be sure to use ion-charged ceramic brushes, flat irons, blow dryers, and heat rollers when styling your hair to cut down on damage and static. Using the right tools makes a difference in how your hair looks and feels. Good tools and products can be found at all price points. We like Pantene, Rene Furterer, Pureology, White Sands, and Redken among others. Finding the right products for your hair is personal. You need to read reviews carefully. Good hair can be pricey, but less expensive brands are excellent, too. I love Rene Furterer and Pantene products. Also try a sample of a pricy product before buying, or shop where you can return anything that is truly a bad fit for you.
Need suggestions for products? Google www.dolcedolce.com and your particular product queries, or www.dolcedolce.com and the word “hair” for our reviews. We also post reviews for new products almost weekly.
Glowing skin
Stop moaning about needing a facial. If I had a dollar for every woman I hear complaining that she desperately needs to get to spa for a facial, darlings, I could employ my own live-in esthetician.
A spa facial from an expert is wonderful for your skin, but it is no substitute for good self-care. If your skin is blotchy and your pores are clogged, then you haven’t been taking care of yourself. No self-respecting beauty should let her skin get in a “desperate” condition. In addition to a daily regime of cleansing, nourishing, and moisturizing, you can also give yourself weekly “spa” treatments at home.
NeoStrata Exuviance Performance Peel AP25 is a blend of AHAs and PHAs including Glycolic Acid, Mandelic Acid and Gluconolactone. It is a salon quality peel that really gives you a glow by removing dead, dull surface skin cells. I love this peel. Use it once or twice week for a glow. A six-week supply cost $70. It takes only minutes for results that will bring you compliments. I am addicted to this peel and always get compliments after using it.
Dry skin needs to be pampered. Avène Soothing Moisture Mask infuses skin with moisture in 10 minutes. Apply it to a damp clean face and watch your skin hydrate. It costs only $24 for weeks of soft skin. This peel will visibly plump your dry skin and leave it feeling like a baby.
Dr. Murad Intensive C Peel boosts skins luminosity and reduces hyperpigmentation with a dose of antioxidants. I am addicted to this quick anti-aging beautifier. It leaves my skin radiant, costs $49, and lasts for weeks. This peel is the best blah-blaster I know!
If you have oily skin or T-zone make your pores seems to shrink with a clay mask. Kiehl’s Rare Earth Masque is a gentle blend of Amazonian White Clay oatmeal and Aloe Vera hydrated as it helps to clean and soothe block pores. This can leave a red, blotchy face looking cool, calm, and collected!
Your pretty fall face
Update your makeup for fall by trading sunny brownish bronzers for more flattering rosy and coral hues of a blusher. If you want to wear a bronzer year round, try one with a hint of pink or coral to ward off winter pallor. Chanel’s new highlighting powder and blush in Brompton Road, a warm pink colour at $80 is a gorgeous way to light up your face. Physicians Formula Powder Palette Mineral Glow Pearls Blush, Natural Pearl, at $11 gives a natural radiant finish to your face. A pop of soft colour makes you look alive in cooler light.
Play up your eyes with a stroke of liner in a complementary colour. Experiment with soft pencils or a liquid liner. To avoid smears, set the liner with a dusting of powder before applying mascara. Watch green or hazel eyes come alive with a stroke of plum or deep black liner, accent blue eyes with warm brown and mink tones, and make brown eyes glow with copper, khaki, or deep plum liner.

This holiday season, celebrate skinny!

Husband and wife fitness experts Dave and Carrie Woodward Holiday parties and other festivities can pack on the pounds and undo the best intentions of dieters. Husband and wife fitness experts Dave and Carrie Woodward have tips and strategies to help you survive the holiday season without gaining a pound.
The good news is that according to a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine, holiday weight gain has been exaggerated. Most people gain a pound at most, not the five to seven pounds the media has reported in past years. The bad news is that studies also show overweight people tend to gain more weight over the holidays – up to five pounds.
So if you are changing your life style and trimming down, this is when you need to be vigilant. And if you are over 40, even that one pound will be harder to lose than when you were younger, so up your exercise regime and keep track of treats and cocktails to stay slim and healthy.
This holiday season, celebrate skinny!
Here are their tips:
Eat before You Go Out to Eat
Opt for a healthy snack before eating out. You'll get a great boost of nutrients and keep your hunger in check. This will help you avoid ordering appetizers or snacking on chips and salsa or bread because you won't be starving come meal time.
Go for the Extra Veggies
"Vegetables are fantastic for your body and low in calories. They are loaded with nutrients, minerals, vitamins and fiber, which will fill you up without the fat. They'll make you feel good, and eating them on a regular basis is going to make you look even better.”
Avoid Anything White
"No matter if they are part of the appetizer or the main meal, white sauces, butter, rice, bread, pasta, whipped cream, cream cheese, fresh crème, sour cream – all should be kept away with a 10-foot spoon. Follow this simple rule: Unless it's cauliflower, avoid white foods when eating out!
Box It Before You Eat It
When dining out, it is extremely easy to overeat when eating out because you have no control over how much is served on your plate. Before you start eating, ask your server to box up half of your meal. Yes, you can wait until you're "done" eating to ask for a box, but why risk missing the halfway mark when you can take care of your portion control before you dig in? The chances of you actually having anything left over for a box dramatically decreases the longer you sit eating. So save yourself the trouble. You'll be so glad you had the foresight, as you continue to benefit from your diet and have not just one but two enjoyable meals.

Make pricy shoes new again

The patent leather on these heels is now perefect again and so are the soles!
Don’t you hate it when your favourite shoes get nicks in the heels and start to look tacky? They lose that cute, classy, chic look when the heels are all chewed up. City streets, grates, cobblestones, and even driving can damage the shoes of the most fastidious diva.
Now you can give your fabulous and pricy shoes new life.
For years, I have had my favourite shoes renewed at specialty cobblers. They have stripped the heels and carefully replaced the leather. They have touched up or replaced soles and made my shoes look brand new.
I have until recently lived in places where I was lucky to find skilled craftsmen who could repair my delicate designer shoes. But now these skilled craftsmen people are getting scarce. You may not have access to one to keep your prized footwear in pristine condition.
Zabellos is a new service that offers old world craftsmanship. You can now go online and order designer-level shoe repairs. You can select your repair, get an estimate, and have shipping labels and boxes mailed to you.
The prices for the repairs are very competitive. They begin at $49, including shipping. Repairs take between 10 and 15 days from door to door. Be specific about your needs and do not hesitate to call or email with questions.
I was invited to try the service and sent in pair of my favourite Stuart Weitzman black patent sling-backs. They are what I call my "workhorse shoes," as I walk in them frequently on city streets. The heels and soles take a beating. They were returned with perfectly-recovered heels and new soles. The $89 cost of repair extended the life of my hard-to-find size and style of shoes that retail for much more. For me that is a bargain.
Like new heels and soles for my favoueite city walking shoesBy using services such as Zabellos I have kept my designer shoes looking fabulous for decades. I also like to send in my designer boots for post-winter rehab and zipper replacements after a season of slush and salt.
Now you can buy the shoes you want and wear them confidently, knowing you have the help you need to keep them looking fabulous!

Must-have tooth whitening pens

A white smile makes you look more attractive and more professional. Dingy yellow, grey, or stained teeth put you at a disadvantage in the workplace and socially.
That is why we are mad about the new tooth whitening pens from Smileactives.
There are two versions of these clever new whitening pens. They both let you take effective teeth whitening with you. And they also make tooth whitening faster and easier than ever. So if you have ever needed to clean red wine or coffee stains off your teeth at a party, or bought whitening strips but can’t remember to use them, these pens are for you!
Original Smileactives® Pen costs $25. It takes less than a minute to apply. It uses 9% stabilized hydrogen peroxide. And its makers say results are visible in two days! Each pen lasts about three weeks with twice-a-day use.
The Vibrite® tooth whitening pen costs $35. Each pen lasts for up to three weeks when used twice daily. It is a patent-pending vibratory pen that uses a slightly stronger 12% stabilized hydrogen peroxide. The micro-vibrations help the gel penetrate more effectively according to the creators and results should be visible after only one day.
Both pens are designed to be used at least twice daily after brushing. I love the idea of carrying one for touch-ups after eating or drinking staining foods, as they may be used safely up to four times a day.
According to Smileactives the pens contain 50 percent more gel than other whitening pens on the market.
The creators of Smileactives advise that for best results, refrain from eating or drinking for 30 minutes after application, as the gel continues to work for 30 minutes after it is applied. They guaranteed whitening – up to 10 shades with a single pen.
I tried the Smileactives VibritePen. I really like it. It appears to have a lot more gel in it than other pens that I have tried in the past – and I have tried many of them. It is easy to use. And I noticed subtle whitening from the first day of use. I expect my teeth will continue to whiten even though they are already fairly white. I like the minty taste and will carry one with me to social occasion to avoid being embarrassed by unexpected stains. This is the perfect complement to my teeth-whitening regime.
These pens are available at www.smileactives.com, or at QVC.com.

Sweet and natural beauty

One of our favourite Atlanta PR mavens, Melanie Mitchell, created Gourmet Body Pastries an all-natural body and hair care line. She became motivated when a close friend was diagnosed with stage-3 estrogen receptive breast cancer. Melanie was shocked by the unexpected diagnosis. “I was extremely concerned at how a female in her late thirties could be so affected by such a disease.”
Melanie began to worry if the chemicals she had been using on her hair and body might be harming her. “I stopped putting relaxers in my hair in 2010 and continued learning the importance of keeping hazardous chemicals, and parabens off my skin and hair,” Melanie said, as she explained the inspiration behind her new business. “I learned that there were many healing properties in various carrier oils, vegetable butters, essential oils and other ingredients I had in my kitchen cupboards. I started combining various oils, Shea butter, and a few other ingredients and would place it on my skin. My skin felt moisturized and the product smelled amazing.” That was the beginning of Gourmet Body Pastries.
I witnessed Melanie’s personal transformation. She has never looked better, her skin glows, and her hair looks fabulous. She is a walking advertisement for her own Gourmet Body Pastries.  The line consists of all Whipped Shea Body, Sugar Body Scrub, and Hair Moisturizing Cream. They are all natural and smell sweet and delicious. And of course they are all natural and free of harmful additive, dyes, and scents.
Gracey Hitchcock with Melanie MitchellI attended a recent event Melanie held that also featured a speaker from the Young Survivor’s Coalition, a group that supports young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. http://www.youngsurvival.org/
This is an important organization, as few people think about young women when they think about breast cancer. But the disease can affect all women.
Gourmet Body Pastries are great holiday gift idea for the natural beauties on your list.

Cold Light, a chilling tale

Jenn Ashworth’s Cold Light is a chilling tale of how the foolish teenage passions, vanity, and ennui of three teenaged girls lead them into a dangerous web of secrets.
Cold Light is set in a small city in northern England that is obsessed with the death of a local teenager, Chloe, and her boyfriend, who have been found drowned.
Ashworth tells the story of Chloe’s death through a series of flashbacks that involve her two best friends. They are plain girls who fell under the thrall of Chloe’s good looks and dominating personality.
As Ashworth slowly unwraps the mystery of Chloe’s death, she also peels back the layers of teenage vulnerabilities and cruelty to make this a very shocking and compelling mystery.
Cold Light is exceptionally well written. Ashworth keeps readers delicately off balance as she slowly drops each nugget of information, carefully revealing subplots and character nuance.
Cold Light is not only an exceptionally well-written mystery, it is also a shocking picture of the lengths some teenage girls will go for acceptance.
