1. Red Carpet looks for less

Retailers, editors, and even designers know that real trend-setters these days are celebrities. Events like the recent Golden Globes are the best place to spot the hottest new looks and pick up an idea or two. The most popular styles will be in stores before you can blink – and all at different prices points.

When you “borrow” the look don’t forget the details. Amal Alamuddin’s long white gloves set off her classic black gown to elegant perfection. And many of the younger stars wore their hair in what is now being called the “undone Bardot”, a loose updo that is younger and sexier than a classic chignon.  Take special care to notice the portion of small clutches and sleek sandals that enhance the formal dresses.

Here are a few look-alikes of our favourite Golden Globe looks:

This dress from Lauren Ralph Lauren is only $180.  And while it is not an exact copy of Amul Alamuddin’s, it does have the same classic look.  The reason I chose this dress is that it looks much more expensive than it is because of its elegant lines and the matte jersey fabric. The shirring at the waist is also very forgiving. I might also remove the sequin trim at the shoulder and replace it with a piece of jewelry.

Amy Adams also went for the goddess look in a draped gown from Versace. David’s Bridal Bridesmaid Collection one shoulder gown with pleats in lilac for only$179.00 will give the look. Add matching shoes and keep your hair soft like Amy’s to channel her look.

We loved Naomi Watts in her yellow Gucci gown.  She always dresses to show off her slender shape and is never overwhelmed. This satin ruched dress was only $99 from celeb16.com. You can find a pricier dress or try this look in another colour. The thing to remember is the slender silhouette and a dress that fits well so you don’t have to keep pulling it up. Also notice how the jeweled belt buckle and striking necklace work together to show of her slender waist and pretty face.

You can copy the looks of most of your favourite stars, but some styles are more wearable than others. Jennifer Lopez wore a striking jeweled caftan.  I didn’t try to copy the look for less because the semi-transparent, flowing style is hard for most women Amy Adams' lookto pull off. It is also very difficult to duplicate due to the fine beadwork and fabric.

Also be careful about overly plunging necklines and very stiff fabrics. Unless you tape a daring décolleté to your body, as most stars do, you can end up overexposed instead of glamourous. And stiff fabric and overly large skirts can make you look heavy and dumpy.
